Do You Have The Funk




Ok, so I'm in a mood, and The Meters put me there. I'm prepping tomorrow's "Weekend Mix." It's an intercontinental collaboration with my dear old pal, a funkmeister if there ever was one, Bill B. in the U.K.

This mix promises to get you up offa that thang. (I'll stop talking like that.)

Now, I know this is last minute, but let's see how it goes.

    on the other hand, my favorite NYC funk song (because I have such vivid memories of walking around Manhattan and hearing it in every store): "Shaft."

    And Sly's "Thank you."

    too cliched?

    EWF's Shining Star, Ohio Player's Skin Tight or anything off JB's Paris concert.

    or from left field, a one-shot UK metal/punk trio called Underneath What had a B-side instrumental version of "Le Freak" that was the awesome.

    I'd offer the thought of some prime Little Feat, or "Thankful & Thoughtful" by Sly & The Stone, or something by Medeski Martin & Wood.

    Funky or not, the first thing three things that popped into my head were: "Thank You (for Lettin' Me...)" by Sly & Co, "Living for the City" by Mr. Wonder, "Supernatural Thing" by Ben E. King and... "You Dropped a Bomb on Me" by the Gap Band. ;)

    And thanks Sal for helping send me on a Meters/Nevilles music trip today, one of my musical places to visit.

    Or "(Funky) Sex Farm" by Spinal Tap?

    Funk Pop A Roll, by XTC?

    Funk #49?

    Or anything by Grand Funk Railroad?

    No, but seriously...

    There's a fine line (IMO) between Funk, Disco and Soul, but I've always had a soft spot for "Jungle Boogie" by Kool & The Gang.

    sorry i may have gotten here late--i was visiting a friend who's mother has been ill...my problem with making a contribution to your list is that i've got a collection of what is likely the 500 greatest funk tunes of all time (not to mention, a ton of stuff that just didn't make the top 500)...so where do i start?...well, that's a rough one for me...so, I'll just close my eyes and let my finger pick out one from the list...ok...here it is...it's Hot Pants by Carleen and the Groovers (not a bad choice, if I say so myself)...I'll send it to you, but next time you do this, give a guy some notice...
