Tom Petty-Goin' Deep: THE WEEKEND MIX

This was not easy. Usually, these mixes create themselves. This time, both the selection and sequencing went through various stages of editing. I wanted to stay away from all the hits. We all know the hits. Some hits aren't even very good. But I just couldn't leave off "American Girl," and both "Here Comes My Girl" and "Walls" are personal favorites, so they needed to be here for my purposes. At one point, I had five songs from "Full Moon Fever" without any hits included. Call me boring, but that is my favorite Petty record. Anyway, that didn't happen. This did.

I love all of these songs. The mix opens with "Hurt," my single favorite Petty tune and really, a perfect way to power chord into 80 minutes of music. I await the yays and nays. I am curious as to what absolutely needed to be here for you that isn't, or is, for that matter.

I called the mix "Goin' Deep," but for most fans of Tom Petty, these tracks will be familiar. "You Come Through" is probably the deepest track here. This comes from the "Playback" boxed set, included on the disc of rarities. It's a track recorded with Lenny Kravitz and boy, does it work.

As is always my goal, I wanted something that would sound good altogether.

"I Forgive It All" closes out the set. It's about as beautiful as it gets, and a perfect ending.

Rest in peace, Tom.

Thank you Sal, that is a fantastic set, I can't wait to listen. Tom Petty had so much depth. Here's an alternative Goin' Deep setlist:

Fooled Again (I Don't Like It)
Too Much Ain't Enough
Shadow of a Doubt (A Complex Kid)
Between Two Worlds
Crawling Back to You
Change the Locks
Asshole
Supernatural Radio
One More Day, One More Night
Lonesome Sundown
Come On Down To My House
I Should Have Known It
Forgotten Man

My heart is still heavy.

Just listened to "Long After Dark" this morning. It looks like a great list of songs. I'm looking forward to digging in. There's always more to add, but to this set I would've added "When the Time Comes."

What a week!

Thanks for this mix Sal. I didn't know where to begin (or end) with my Tom Petty bingeing.

I saw Mo Kenney at The Horseshoe Tavern last night; her encore was a version of Mary Jane's Last Dance that blew the lid off the joint.

Thank you Sal. All I have is his Greatest Hits, and these ain't those. Bless you. RIP Tom. Rock on.

Louisiana Rain is probably my favorite Petty song, and agree with including Here Comes My Girl. I would have also added The Best of Everything--I love the mingling of the Band and Heartbreakers.

Looking forward to firing this one up.

Many thanks for putting in the time & effort to bring us this mix; these things should be a labour of love, I suppose. As I've had the Anthology discs on repeat in the car, this compilation is the perfect counterbalance and it's topped & tailed with two of my favourite tunes too. Cheers & may your weekend be a good one.

It's your personal list and you're sharing with us, so it's perfect as is. Louisiana Rain, so glad to see that here. Thank you. And thanks again to Tom for sharing his rock and roll heart with us. As someone said recently, we got lucky.

love the list, hate that you had to do it.

Square One popped up on my Petty shuffle yesterday. Never noticed how great it is before. It's alright, if you live the life you please.

This is exactly what I need right this minute.

Being a casual fan I’m not familiar with any of these cuts. Looking forward to finding new (to me) gems like “Walls”

Well there go my next 80 minutes.

I'd add "In The Dark of the Sun", "Southern Accents" and "Zombie Zoo", because Tom hated it. But I love it.

Chris, Dark Of The Sun is here

Love that Deliver Me and Wake Up Time are on here. Your list looks great. Mine would likely be quite different, but that just shows the depth of quality songs in his catalog. Thanks for continuing to share your thoughts and passions with us and for giving us a place to do the same.

Lovely list, Sal. Thank you. The other events of that terrible day left me numb, but news of Tom Petty's death cracked my heart. I guess it's hard to invest in strangers and yet Tom Petty, though I never knew him, didn't feel like a stranger, so much of him was there for everyone to share in his music.

If I would add anything to your list it would be 'Room at the Top'.

I got a room where everyone
Can have a drink and forget those things
That went wrong in their life

The times I wish there was a place like that to go to...

And cmealha, I kind of envy you hearing Walls for the first time. That one's pretty much stitched into my DNA I reckon. Hope you enjoy it.

Thanks for this. Not a big fan of his but saw him on his first visit to the UK and O.S. later. I do have all his vinyl though!

Great list - you included "The Wild One, Forever" and "A Face In The Crowd," which I think are key. But there are others I'd include:

Luna
Kings Highway
Nightwatchman
Too Good To Be True
a Travelin' Wilburys song has to be on my list - hard to pick one, maybe Last Night

and perhaps the two most appropriate for his death...

You And I Will Meet Again
Letting You GO

Listened to this yesterday. Apart from the few "hits", I only knew Louisana Rain (as it's from the only TP album I own apart from the greatest hits album with "Mary Jane's Last Dance" on it). Very solid and consistent. I liked it.

Thanks for the mix. I was intrigued to see reports that as people streamed petty songs, the two albums that sold or were streamed the most were Greatest Hits (of course) and Wildflowers. Wildflowers? I would have guessed Full Moon Fever for obvious reasons. But my mix would definitely include the track "Wildflowers," my favorite song of his.
