Afflictions

From New Orleans' Lower Ninth, here is Charles Brimmer and his powerful cover of O.V. Wright's "Afflicted," which was relegated to the b-side of Brimmer's 1970 single "Your So Called Friends" on the "Hep'Me" label.

There are only subtle differences between Brimmer's version and O.V.'s version, but I felt them, and I think Brimmer nails it.

Here's O.V.'s version, which was also a b-side. In Wright's case, it backed his hit "Ace Of Spades."

Remember the good old days of amazing b-sides?

  1. I must say that "Hep Me" is hands down the greatest name for a record label ever.

  2. Steve beat me too it... as good as the song is, the record company is even better.

A discogs search revealed one Senator Jones founded the label along with several other ones, including Shagg Records and SuperDome records, and the best one of all... Whurley Burley Records!

  3. I'm picking OV Wright over the (excuse the pun) overwrought Brimmer take.
Agreed with the coolness of the label's name, tho the pedant in me would rather they placed the apostrophe where it belongs -- between the E and P, not after the P. But then, for some reason, folks have problems with misplaced apostrophes -- just ask whoever was responsible for the graphics on the Mamas and the Papas debut.
