Paul Weller has a new covers record coming in July. That is exciting news for some and a drag for others. His last covers record "Studio 150" got mixed reviews. I thought it was fantastic. It was clever, with a good number of not so faithful interpretations that proved Weller wasn't just sleepwalking his writer's block away. The track list on the upcoming "Find El Dorado" includes songs by Ray Davies, Bobby Charles, Merle Haggard, The Bee Gees, and the first single, a jazzy soul cut by French band The Guerillas. The album also features some special guests, including Robert Plant and Noel Gallagher.
And speaking of Gallagher, check out Weller's cover of Oasis's "One Way Road" while you're here.
I, for one, am looking forward to it.
ReplyDeleteHe never disappoints...and has continued to both challenge himself and celebrate his influences. He never really got his due in the US, but remains one of the best artists out there.
ReplyDeleteBoth of these covers are good, though the saxophone solos in the first one seem to be for another song. The second has Paul channeling Joe Cocker.
ReplyDeleteToday's cover with The Swell Season doing Candi Staton is sublime, and the song of the day is fine, too.

That Bobby Barnes cut is killer, and a deep cut all the way, since apparently Barnes made a half dozen singles from the 60s into the 80s. And the guy sounds like Sam Moore. Wow. Cleveland Jeff
ReplyDeleteFound myself listening to each several times! Thanks for that!
