I woke up yesterday to an email from my friend Jeff.
"Have been obsessing over this Gyasi album the past few days — was wondering if you had heard it or had heard of him. A throwback, but knowing you like The Darkness as much as me, thought I would pass it along in case you hadn’t."
I hadn't...until yesterday. And now I love Gyasi. Thank you, Jeff.
"Here Comes The Good Part" is Gyasi's new one. It's his second. If The Darkness channeled Queen, AC/DC and Led Zeppelin throughout their career, Gyasi is taking what he learned from binging on Bowie, Bolan and The Sweet. This record is a glammy hookfest. And while The Darkness can feel like parody at times, Gyasi feels more like The Dukes Of Stratosphear, only with Bolan and Bowie as the honorees.
If I had 20 guesses, I would not have pegged Gyasi as a native of West Virginia. This record has a very British strut to it. I actually saw pink boas and heard the sequins dropping with every riff and chorus.
Gyasi admits, “I’m all for acknowledging my influences. If you can’t hide it, hang bells on it.”

If you're a fan of "Aladdin Sane," "The Slider" or "Desolation Boulevard," there is a lot to love on "Here Comes The Good Part." I'm going to stick with this one for a bit, and then head back to his debut "Rock & Roll Sword Fight."

Seems to check all the boxes in a convincing manner, the only problem being the level of derivation. A legacy act without one keeps me at a distance.
Very fun album. Best line: they're headed on a road trip and the the singer sings "We've got everything we need/Cigarettes, hairspray and a bag full of weed."

This is tremendous! Thanks for posting.
I approach music objectively. If it attracts me, I don't care when it came out. So, as derivative as this can be, all I'm hearing is catchy crunchy, and I like catchy crunchy, whether it's The Slider or Gyasi or the Pooh Sticks' 'Great White Wonder' (an album with liner notes overtly calling out what they're referencing, if one can't hear it for themselves in the songs). Often the open derivation is a source of amusement for me.
