S.O.S. (Heart In Distress)- Christine Cooper
Juke Box Fury- Rickie Lee Jones
Let It Crawl- Society's Bag
Lights Out- Jerry Byrne
The World's A Mess; It's In My Kiss- X
Brand New Cadillac- Vince Taylor & The Playboys
After Hours- Velvet Underground
S.O.S. (Heart In Distress)- Christine Cooper
(The Cameo-Parkway label was hit or miss. Hard to miss with anything by The Orlons. But then you have Clint Eastwood and Senator Bobby Kennedy. Still, there are plenty of great, lesser known 45s on that label, including this favorite of mine.)
Juke Box Fury- Rickie Lee Jones
(Hard to follow 1981's "Pirates," and maybe that's why "The Magazine" seemed inferior at the time. It's a solid record and this one stands out.)
Let It Crawl- Society's Bag
(Pick any one song off of Rhino's 2006 boxed set "What It Is! Funky Soul And Rare Grooves" and you'll be happy. I picked this one this week.)
Lights Out- Jerry Byrne
(I'm reading John Broven's book "Rhythm & Blues In New Orleans" and listening as I go along. Somewhere in the first 125 pages, this rocker, co-written by Mac Rebennack while he was still playing guitar gets mentioned favorably...for good reason.)
The World's A Mess; It's In My Kiss- X
(Speaking of rockers...)
Brand New Cadillac- Vince Taylor & The Playboys
(And speaking still of rockers, you know, I heard The Clash version before I heard the original,)
After Hours- Velvet Underground
(There was a time when a song like this would make my skin crawl. But some time in the early 90's, I went from not understanding the VU at all to becoming a full blown fan. This is a perfect closer to their third album and so it closes this week's SOTW.)
What It Is! is a fantastic box set. X, RLJ and VU get a lot of spins here.

Brand New Cadillac, one of the classics of British rock n' roll alongside Shaking All Over, Please Don't Touch, Move it and I Saw Her Standing There (off the top of my head).
ReplyDeleteJ from Europe.
REM used to close shows with After Hours, after a rocking version of See No Evil. Before the internet those kind of bands and songs were not easy to discover down here, and they seemed so exotic and cool and foreign.
ReplyDeleteThe 2 great finds for me are S.O.S. and Let It Crawl. I certainly have to dig in to the Rhino collection if the Society's Bag track is any indication.
ReplyDeleteWowzer, it's like a Slash Records one-two punch with Lights Out (covered memorably by Los Lobos) followed by X. I call a win-win, especially since Byrne's original version is still such a kick-ass number.
