As I mentioned yesterday, I spent two full work days reconstructing my music library from two different hard drives. That I almost lost it all was not sitting well with me. The upside is that I made it through hell, and picked up a few goodies on the way out.
"Backwash" was something compiled by my old friend and business partner Tony, a huge Replacements fan. Paul Westerberg was a pretty busy guy during the 90's and by 1999, he had accumulated almost two dozen stray songs for soundtracks, Japanese pressings, and single b-sides. It might have been more, but Tony found 20 and put them altogether for this playlist, and it's a good one.
The original playlist was subtitled "The Solo Years" and it included a rare Chris Mars b-side, and a few stray dogs from Tommy. I think it plays better just highlighting Paul.
The original back cover insert above includes the origin of each track.
Enjoy!

Thank you for highlighting one of America's best, lost songwriters. Such a shame he no longer feels the need to grace us with his presence. He is sorley missed.
ReplyDeleteMight be a problem at my end, but nothing happens when you click on the "zip" ? Thanks
ReplyDeleteAs with all zip files here, I check and then check again, once before and once after publishing. All good on my end. Try either refreshing or using a different browser. That is usually the solution.
ReplyDeletethat worked - thanks!
DeleteSal; Thanks for this one from PW. This is pretty fab in all the right ways. Michael D.
ReplyDeleteThanks Sal. I'm unfamiliar with many of these and I look forward to getting to hear a "new" batch of Westerberg songs.
ReplyDeleteWhat an era–songs for the soundtracks to TV shows Friends and Melrose Place and the movie Tank Girl! Plus, that Japanese market really knew how to squeeze out a few extra songs from artists. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteThanks!
ReplyDeleteLooks like fun. Thanks.
ReplyDelete- Paul in DK
The title alone is terrific.
ReplyDeleteThank you sir!
ReplyDeleteOh Paul....
ReplyDeleteI'll ask it again -- how the hell did I miss that "Nowhere Man" cover back in the day?
ReplyDelete"I Want My Money Back" and the live shit are muy tits. That's the kind of mood I'm in. Thanks for sharing what your friend shared with you. Have a tremendous weekend.
DeleteWhat a great comp. Thanks so much. Great way to start the weekend.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Sal. I had some of these (but not all) and most I wasn't aware they existed. And yes, as someone else noted, excellent title.
ReplyDeleteBack for a second comment. This comp is truly exceptional. I can't help but leave on repeat. Great songs, great pacing. Awesome - thanks so much.
ReplyDeleteGood stuff of lately! Thank you.
ReplyDeleteGreat stuff Sal, thanks for this, nearly all new to me, so looking forward to listening.
ReplyDeleteThat had to be scary! I'm glad everything worked out fine, thanks for the mix.
