Sold Me Down The River- The Alarm
Should Have Known Better- Richard Lloyd
Let's Do This- Todd Rundgren w/Moe Berg
Sweet Dreams-Yes
Rain On The Roof- The Lovin' Spoonful
Ocean In Your Eyes- Smokey & Miho
Just A Little Misunderstanding- The Contours
Sold Me Down The River- The Alarm
(An ideal guitar and drum sound on this rocker from The Alarm.)
Should Have Known Better- Richard Lloyd
("Alchemy" is a far better album than I remembered. I used to pull it out and listen to "Misty Eyes" and the title track, but really the whole album plays solidly.)
Let's Do This- Todd Rundgren w/Moe Berg
(From "White Knight," a successful collaborations record, I think. Not a duets record, which is different.)
Sweet Dreams-Yes
(A great early single that may actually appeal to those who say they hate Yes.)
Rain On The Roof- The Lovin' Spoonful
(Put this up there with "Hot Fun" by Sly & "Groovin'" by The Rascals for besy summer songs.
Ocean In Your Eyes- Smokey & Miho
(Never a fan of Cibo Matto, but Miho's collab with the great Smokey Hormel pushed a few buttons. Something about this track really gets to me in a good way.)
Just A Little Misunderstanding- The Contours
(A Motown fave that didn't even crack the Top 40, this was co-written by Stevie Wonder and features Stevie on drums.)
I was completely unaware of Smokey & Miho. Great track, thanks!
ReplyDeleteCan’t wait to hear that Contours track.
ReplyDeleteThanks for doing up your zip again. I don't listen to enough of that fine Welsh band The Alarm so their track (and you're correct: it is a cracker) should inspire me to do better. Cheers!
ReplyDeleteBest track of the bunch is the Contours. It was a huge hit in SoCal. Sounds like a very 4 Tops-ish arrangement. Lead vocals by Levi Stubbs' brother Joe is part of the reason.
ReplyDeleteAs far as best summer songs, I hear you on Sly and the Rascals. The Spoonful should be Summer In the City over Rain On the Roof though.
Alarm track is AOR friendly. For me once is enough. And that once was in 1989. Not much to figure out there. The Yes song I like but mix is ridiculously bass heavy. That's not the way I remember it.
Smokey Hormel is the shit. He does it all, Loved it when he toured with Waits.
Gotta run

I'm here in Atlanta with no A/C since Sunday - having a contractor come out tomorrow and will have to replace the entire system - me writing a check I kinda don't have - so I'm glad to have MUSIC ! Thanks for this as always
ReplyDeleteSounds rough. I hope the contractor is trustworthy. DId you get a second opinion? Must be in the 90's out there and fuckin' humid. Hope you're not getting hozed. That's when a pool comes in handy.

I saw a British detective show whose plot revolved around the Northern Soul scene and the character pulled that Contours record out to play. Maybe rare in the UK but super easy to find in the States.

To VR above - yeah, this contractor is trustworthy. He's done work for us before, and did a good job installing the new system. It's all just crazy expensive, but that's the life of a homeowner.
