Zep, Too.

In case you missed it, please behold a 78 year old rock and roll god performing an almost 60 year old song as if it was written yesterday.

Our differences aside regarding Led Zeppelin, this is quite amazing.

  1. Wow -- that's pretty amazing. And BTW -- welcome back. Hope you recharged the batteries, as it were. 😎

  2. OMG that was amazing! They put a lot of thought into the lighting for that, too. Great arrangement. His voice sounds great and you know, the blues get better the older you are. I always thought it was adorably dorky how they referenced Lord of the Rings (long before it was cool), though really there are NO pretty girls in Mordor. (And Gollum isn't evil; he's cursed! But that's really nitpicky.)

    1. Poor Gollum! So misunderstood! Yes, referencing Lord of the Rings before it was cool is adorably gorky. But didn't they deny this? I'm old-can't remember.

  3. And what differences on Led Zeppelin??!! Who disses them? I mean, I'm not remotely a rabid fan but they're iconic and great. It's indisputable.

    1. You must have a super power that filters out blog negativity. Dissing Zeppelin On Burning Wood could be a documentary.

  4. Dissing Zep? I'm such a weirdo that my favorite album of theirs is "In Through the Out Door." 😎

  5. don't be coy, y'all. Sal has long been a defender of Zep's "Presence" and that brings the haters out of the woodwork.

  6. Great performance and arrangement. Plant has really done a remarkable job adapting, on several levels.

  7. "Worst live show I've ever seen."
    (1968)

    "Jimmy Plagiarist."

    "Robert Plant can't sing."

"I stopped listening after Zeppelin II."

    "Musical masturbation."

"More concerned with stuffing cucumbers in their pants than playing music."

"I'd rather listen to Ten Years After."

    I'll stop here.
    :)

Now I must listen to both Zep 2 and "Presence."

  8. Those are some dumb comments, except for the Ten Years After comment. That one's a valid opinion (and one I share). And today's cover is from my favorite Rickie Lee Jones record, the 10" Girl At Her Volcano, with the best ever version of Under The Boardwalk. Crank that baby (the whole record) up on a good stereo system, and the term audiophile won't seem so silly after all.

    1. You're right. It is a valid opinion in the context of "I'd rather listen to...than..." In the context of dissing Zeppelin, it reads as if LZ were unable to play the blues, or at least that is how I remember the conversation.

    2. Yeah, that's the wrong context. I like Zeppelin OK, and they can clearly play the blues, but I have come to enjoy Ten Years After more generally. They are way more fun, and have considerably less pretense.

  9. I saw this a few days ago - stunning arrangement and delivery. Best version of this song I've ever heard.

  10. Beautiful. Not sure how any one could not like Led Zeppelin. Probably one of the only bands that I like every song on every album. Welcome back. Hope you had a nice time in New Orleans.

  11. HOLY EFFING SHIT - AMAZING - I WAS FLOORED LISTENING TO THIS! There are so many cover bands out there, but how can I go when this damn guy can STILL SING???!!!!!

  12. That was wonderful. Better than the original.

  14. Robert has spent the past couple of decades exploring his voice, rather than trying to stretch it, and even on sub-par material, he is mesemerising.

  15. As much as Robert Planet was often Zep's weak link (in 2 words: lyrics, vocals), I have to admit that his solo career is/was pretty awesome. Very few wrong steps...

  16. Instagram post - Plant, Colbert talking about Sea Shanty's pre show- you have to watch

  17. I thought it was stunning. I had very low expectations when I saw it but what and amazing arrangement and performance.

  18. On another note, thanks for todays cover song and for reminding me how beautiful "Rainbow Sleeves" by Rickie Lee Jones is. Just a phenomenal song, performance and recording.

  19. By the end of the first chorus I was in tears. Turns out he wasn't the weak link in LZ after all.

  20. If I had a choice to see a live rock band play rock or acoustic, I would almost always choose the rock version. That being said, he sang the hell out of that but the acoustic interlude killed the momentum. Still nice to see/hear him give a nod to his past. Well done.

    1. Yep. Yep. And yep. But it’s too good to pick nits. Still, yep.

  21. The acoustic interlude harkens back to him being a fan of Fairport Convention (Sandy Denny/Battle of Evermore - Richard Thompson) iirc, Plant said if not for Led, it would have been them

  22. For me, the acoustic interlude was perfect - it brought an intense focus to the song. I believe it did to those in attendance as you could hear a pin drop in the audience. The contrast made the end portion of the song stand out more.

LZ - light, shade, light, shade... remember?
