Some Early "Drama" From Nicole Atkins

I can't put my finger on exactly what it is that irks me about Nicole Atkins. I have friends who swear by her, dig her records, and see her live whenever they can. I've tried, and aside from a song or two, nothing ever sticks. I've also seen her live a few times, as an opener for Ian Hunter and some others I can't recall. She was fine, but I was underwhelmed and ultimately put off by her oversinging, which may be the problem, actually. Every song is sung like the finale in "Evita."

That said, here's her new single from the upcoming album "Drama," due in September on Chris Isaak's new Sun Records imprint Wicked Game Records. Atkins opened for Isaak on a bunch of shows recently and now, she's got a new deal. Way to go!

I do like this new single and will absolutely give "Drama" and Nicole another chance in September.

  1. I lost track of her over the years but enjoyed some early music. Bu Chris Isaak has an imprint at Sun Records? Do you just insert a quarter and sing into a mic a la Elvis to lay down a song? Maybe I can finally get signed!

    1. For your 25¢ it's Jack White's 79 year old " Voice O Graph"

  2. I know nothing about her but I quite like this one. She reminds me of someone I once knew.

  3. It's been a while since I've listened to her music. II liked some of her songs, didn't like the others, but I can't remember any of them now. She has a great voice, I'll check out the new album.

  4. I'm more of a fan than maybe you. I dig the new song and look forward to the album. AND -- maybe not the song for June -- I loved that Christmas song she did with Gaspard Royant. Ho Ho Ho!
