My biggest takeaway (so far) -- Democrats did just not show up to the polls for whatever reason. Trump's ceiling remained the same as indicated by the overall popular vote totals.. That's what's going to haunt this country for generations now that he'll be able to solidify a conservative Supreme Court for the next 30+ years.
Reading these comments, laughing my ass off. This is almost as much fun as watching Rachel Madcow melting down last night, and Morning Joe this morning. Happy Days are hear again.
I'm pretty sure the "Leninist" or Bannon types are only a minority (though I sense that at least one of them might happen to be right here in our midst). What makes up the difference, creating a majority as such, is the much larger group of folks who -- as pmac implies -- are at risk of losing all equanimity over the slightest bump in the price of eggs. True, this larger group does place relatively more importance on keeping down the cost of groceries than on, say, protecting human rights, preserving democracy, resisting fascism, that kind of thing. But its members are not typically "into" outright destructiveness -- and certainly not any more so than would have been the case in, for example, late-era Weimar Germany.
As much as I want that to happen, I just don't see it. Sadly, I do think the Democrat Party is DOA. They have no identifiable, reliable, voting base other than African American women, and maybe AA males. That's only 13% of the potential electorate. As much as people thought the youth vote would go to the dems, it went decidely Maga. That's a foreboding omen as to the future. Oh, and just wait till the mass deportations and tariffs kick in. The mortgage interest rate kicked in high today, because the lenders are already scared shitless as to what a tariff induced trade war will do to the US economy. But, it was all about her emails in 2016, and the price of eggs this time. Yeah......
They don't care. They just won everything, so that's their justification. Trump got 3 million fewer votes than he did in 2020, Harris got 15 million fewer than Biden. Apparently those Dems don't care either. Why not??
Well, she said it was all about democracy and the rule of law, right? And America democratically and lawfully voted to end democracy and the rule of law. It's as if the country was offered a heart transplant and chose to pull the plug instead.
I can't believe it. What the hell is wrong with your fellow citizens? Can they not see through him? I'm just back home on the other side of the Atlantic after 10 days in NYC & intend to hunker down here to await for the fallout. Playing music loud & hoping it was all a dream. Cheers indeed!
My wife is the child of Eastern European jews, who escaped prior to WW2 and settled in NYC. As she told me this morning, her family's roots in the US lasted all of one generation. I went to bed last night before the results (6 hours ahead of EST), but awoke thinking all I needed to be concerned with was the Senate results. I don't recognize what the US has become.
There's a line in "All The President's Men," where Deep Throat describes a party trick to Bob Woodward where Gordon Liddy puts his arm over a lighted match until his hair and flesh start to burn. Someone asked, "What's the trick?" Liddy said, "The trick is not minding." What last night tells me is that people just don't mind all of the horrible shit as long as none of it affects them directly. They will happily trade a couple of thousand migrant children for cheaper tomatoes.
"Four years and out is the only upside" His Supreme Court gave him a get out of jail card while he is President. What's to stop him cancelling the election and staying in the White House?
On the sunny side, let's note that -- all things being equal -- it would be an extremely difficult and time-consuming project to revise or get around the two-term limit as stipulated in the 22nd. Amendment.
On the other, less-than-sunny side, an asshole like Trump could possibly create a loophole by declaring a national emergency that allows him "temporarily" to suspend the whole Amendment. In that case, we too might conceivably end up with some sort of Chancellor or Fuhrer or what-have-you.
However, what I've been hearing about -- and to be sure, this is a notion which may have originated in jest -- is an entirely different scenario, one in which that other asshole Vance helps the rest of the assholes invoke the 25th. Amendment. If so, then IQ45 -- woops! I mean IQ47 could legally be dethroned and replaced as President by Vance himself. Such a development might be wonderful for any number of remaining assholes, what with Vance's being just like Trump, only more of a team player, and less of a loose cannon, and, on top of that, young enough to serve for, who knows, another two or more terms.
Fair enough, all of that may at first sound a bit convoluted. But it becomes way more straightforward if thought of as the price to pay for not having to pay the price of a carton of eggs as per the totally unfettered, utterly impossible, egregiously tyrannical Bidenomics of now.
Someone once told me - 'Many Americans are not what you think of as 'nice people'. They don't care about others. They don't care about concepts like 'democracy', and they don't care about things like the planet. And they will not vote for a woman as their leader'. Seems this person was right. Twice in fact.
I couldn't believe it in 2016; I quadruple can't believe it today.
ReplyDeleteUkraine. Does that mean that TrumPutin can claim a huge country to belong to Russia from now on?
ReplyDeleteMy 2 cents. Mr. Trump is not a cause but a reflection of what this country has turned into. He didn’t start the fire.
ReplyDeleteI don't disagree. But that only makes it hurt more.
DeleteI'm pretty sure that he did start the fire; if not he certainly put a giant fan on it ....
DeleteI can't believe our fellow citizens fell for this crap again. It's so depressing.
ReplyDeleteAnd once again the polls got it all wrong. Wasn't even close. What a sad day
ReplyDeleteI think the people who voted for Trump see themselves reflected in him. Sad that they feel that way.
ReplyDeleteCaptain Al
We're all screwed. The big difference is that the people who voted for him won't know it until his policies kick in.

ReplyDeleteWill you be laughing when they come for you?
DeleteAs Mick Jones (of The Clash) says at the beginnig of "Clampdown" "What Are We Gonna Do Now?"
ReplyDeleteWelcome to Nazi Germany. And the truly frightening part will be seeing which of our fellow countrymen are going to be collaborators.
ReplyDeleteAnne Frank would have been ratted out on day one in today's America.
DeleteI bet China's laughing there socks off.
ReplyDeleteIt would appear that a majority of voters just want to fuck shit up.

DeleteIf there is a world left in four years I do think we see the end of the republican party.

We're going to need a lot of music for the next four years.

ReplyDeleteThe worst thing in this shell-shocked day after is that even music is not helping. I've been robbed.
ReplyDeleteOh dear, well never mind...

ReplyDeleteEXACTLY!
DeleteIt was in Lawrence of Arabia. Also in Alien Prometheus
ReplyDeleteWell, I used the Liddy reference.
ReplyDeleteYeah it’s a good line no matter what film to be honest.
ReplyDeleteNow we will begin to hear about eliminating the two term limit for the presidency.

ReplyDeleteWith the health, shape that moron is in I'll bet he don't even make 4 years
ReplyDeleteGreat, except then you have Vance as POTUS.
