You put in a ton of sweat and tears here, and no one can blame you if you’re done. The world is definitely a colder place these days, and I’m sorry you experienced that first hand from the pavement. Just one little note: I love the Sly that I know, but I don’t know Sly the way you do. Thank you for that BW Deep Sly mix. I will remember you by it, if it’s the last thing from BW to enhance my life. Be well. JB
Mott The Hoople and Bad Company dominated our daily tunes during my college days .... sad to see these rock giants falling. Screw all the bastards that wouldn't help you Sal ... may karma piss on their souls
Remember, Sal that though the glass IS half empty, it's also half full. Sad that you feel unappreciated; all I know is that this is the first thing I read in the morning. Your love of all (ok, most) music and fine writing is inspiring. I get out of bed and feel like I'm lying in the road with my spilled groceries, and then you and BW come along and pick me up. I know I don't say thank you enough, and I'm sure there are many who never say it at all, but we're out there, and we love you.
Perhaps consider an alternative: take the summer off. Entirely. Come back after Labor Day with a full pencil box, fresh looseleaf notebook, and spiffy new backpack. And as far as your worthless, unkind neighbors, I'd suggest. . . uh, maybe . . .um, you could . . . aw, I got nothin'. Hell is other people. (Most anyway, except for BW readers.)
thanks, sal. from a sometime commenter, usual lurker, i've enjoyed your place and shopping at oscarmadisoy. you're never going to sell that Luther Grosvenor 7-inch, tho.
I look forward to reading your blog every single morning, and my lack of comments and appreciation stems from my belief that I usually have nothing worth adding. Nothing to improve upon your post. But when I download your Songs of the Week or Weekend Mixes -- which I usually do -- I cut 'n' paste your comments into the file, since they always make me appreciate the cut more fully. My days would be duller in your absence. Jes' saying.
actually that explanation was helpful. I don't usually (couldn't spell ordanarily) go to the other buttons other than the occasional glance but now i will pay more attention. A lot to pay attention to. thanks P
Nope - you can't go. Maybe go back to basics. There are so many of us who are not acquainted with even a tiny fraction of the music you have shared over the years, and where would we be without you?
Re: musicians dying. We all love music from the 1960s and 1970s and that was 50 or 60 years ago, so this is gonna happen. Maybe think of it this way: you devote the blog to celebrating these bands. You're not mentioning Mott The Hoople and Bad Company for the first time in months or years (or ever) just because one of them died. You ALWAYS celebrate them. You should take pride when someone goes that you know you've been singing their praises for years. You don't have to say, Gee, I wish I'd appreciated them more or wish I shared my love of their music. You turn people on these acts or certain albums or certain songs. You gave them their flowers, as the kids say. And that should be a comforting feeling on the day someone you admire dies. Nothing was left unsaid. celebrate them again!
As Ken D says, maybe worth having a break? Hopefully, you'll come back refreshed. This site means a lot to your readers (listeners?). That's down to you and your writing, your stories, your recommendations, and the enthusiasm and knowledge you bring. I've often wondered how you manage to fit in all the writing and the listening as often/frequently as you do - it can't be easy. I'm another daily visitor and have been for years. However, I haven't commented anywhere near enough, sorry about that. Have a well deserved break, but don't go away please! Sincere thanks for everything you do on your site. Take it easy.
I also don't comment often enough but try to be supportive. Thanks again for all you do for all of us. I find I so many rabbit holes to wander into from visiting here. Today's - courtesy of your Martin Gordon (The Captain of the Pinafore) post - is awesome.
You have owed us nothing, yet you unselfishly gave an awful lot. You've turned me on to some great music. You, and you alone. I wish I could do the same for you, but your depth of knowledge far outclasses mine and I undoubtedly have no surprises to give you in return. So thanks for everything. I'll miss this place, but will keep your blog bookmarked and hope you come back.
Please say it ain't so, Sal. I can't begin to tell you how much my music world has expanded exponentially because of BW. Case in point, I just picked up that Charlie Hunter and Leon Parker album you showcased the other day. I hope after you take some time off you'll feel energized and want to restart the fire. Please know that in these very dark times, your jewel of a music blog art piece is an oasis of love and positiveness. Thank you for everything that you have provided.
hi. not much to add...i read your blog every day. so... i have often told my 2 (now adult) children... when in doubt...side 2 of Abbey Road. Can't hurt to try. thanks Sal...
Oh Sal, don't let the bastards get you down. Lately that sucking sound is everywhere. I don't comment hardly at all but I always visit your site everyday like many others. I tested you for information for my first visit to New Orleans and went to every venue and restaurant you recommended and had a blast! You responded immediately and made the experience so much better. I hope you can continue at some point, but as George says: All things must pass. God bless
Love your blog Sal. Appreciated selling a few records, and buying some too. If you stop, I’ll catch up on the years before I found you. Really sorry about the fall. Feel better.
Played a lot of 80s stuff over the weekend, so one song in particular fits the mood: Yazoo's "Don't Go". (I think they were known as Yaz in the US, one more difference in the "special relationship" 'twixt you and us). Always felt you should hold a fundraiser once or twice a year (like some other music blogs) to help go towards costs - nothing wrong in having a whip round and I'm sure a lot of us would chip in. Anyway, forgive the rambling on. Thanks as always. Cheers!
Miserable bastard this guy......says he wants this site to be a respite and proceeds to moan about his business, his life, other people he encounters, etc. This guy's a black hole that makes Lidia Soprano seem like Suzy Sunshine. Brace up my man and strap on some nuts.....every moment of every day is a gift and a wonder. Wake up tomorrow and make the changes in your life that allow you to appreciate the gift of life you have. Stop whinging and whining like an eight year old girl whose parents took away her iphone.
At first I thought your comment might be satire, as it's such trollery you'd have to be an enormous asshole if it wasn't. I'd say you're the miserable bastard.
It's LIVIA Soprano, and what did she ever contribute to the world? Maybe you have some magic potion that we can drink where we can just wake up and make changes in our lives? I don't hear whinging and whining. I hear frustration.
I'm a little puzzled by this. First, as Christine mentions it is Livia and not Lidia (and by the way the actress who played her was a wonderful, sweet funny woman who once came to my apartment to do an interview and spent the whole time rolling around the floor with our puppy) but Livia the character would kill you with a look; she was tough as nails but then you call Sal a whining eight-year old girl. Plus, Livia Soprano was in her 70s, I'm just so confused. Also, why a girl? Don't boys that age whine? And you're saying Sal doesn't have testicles (if that is true, and I have no idea, how would you know? And are you saying that a person without testicles isn't tough? I wonder what Angel Reese would have to say about that. Maybe a little misogyny there?
So here's the thing. You put out a blog for more than a decade, and see if you get cranky every once in a while. That doesn't make you a girl, it just means that you are human. His business is also slow and if you knew what it's like to struggle to make a living you'd appreciate that more. Maybe you also struggle. If you do, try a little empathy and maybe drop a few bucks into the kitty. That's something else about Sal. I've ordered records from him and for some reason he never gets my order right. There's always extra stuff in the order that I didn't ask for. What a girl! Or a boy! Or Livia Soprano!
Here's the thing People who read and love Burningwood do so not only because of the smarts he brings to the subject but because of the personality that comes with it. And I'm saying this as someone who has gotten as annoyed with him as he has with me. And yet when we're both pissed as hell at each other, he's worrying as much about me as I am about him. Because here's the other thing about Sal -- the guy really would give you the shirt off his back. I don't know if that makes him Livia or Lidia Soprano or a whining girl or a whining boy, who knows but it does occur to me that there's only one person doing the whining here, you know?
Hi Sal - In the past 6 months, I purchased from iTunes the new releases from Lady Blackbird, The Darkness, Jeff Matthews, Galactic & Irma Thomas, Ricky Byrd, Jon Cleary, Gysai, and Van Morrison. All based on your rave reviews and recommendations. If that's not being a big influence, I don't know what is. I hope you decide to return so I can be exposed to more music.
Thanks for all the great MTH work! Can’t complain about getting to 81.
ReplyDelete- Paul in DK
Yeah, but I'd complain if I had a stroke at 71 and lived helplessly for ten years.
DeleteMick in 2 MAJOR bands. Gotta have some chops to do that. End of his life sucked but when he was in his glory he was plugged in.

Great work high lighting another unsung hero for the UK bands
ReplyDeleteCan Quinn explain that avatar ?

ReplyDeleteThanks for your past posts. These days there is just too much music out there to be consumed and not enough time in a day.
ReplyDeleteBy the same token I'm dismayed that when I go down to my basement I realize I will pass before I can hear all the music media that lurks there. Sigh.
