"11/8/13: THE WEEKEND MIX

A bunch of fried chicken-eating, sleazy but lovable roots rockers from Chapel Hill reimagining Nirvana and Pink Floyd, a soul revivalist from Brookline, MA. reinventing Motorhead and the best of Ohio's grunge serving up their version of a Motown classic--it all works sitting alongside classics from The Rascals, The Funk Brothers and Ann Peebles. Even Aerosmith and AC/DC get their grooves on.

This "Weekend Mix" was inspired by yesterday's pass through Lady Dottie & The Diamond's debut and it is my favorite kind of compilation. Opening with a legendary British pubrocker turned producer turned premiere songwriter and closing with the one and only Jimi Hendrix who defied all genres, here is an hour of music that may not look right on paper, but feels, at least to my ears, like it all belongs.

Fasten Your Seatbelts, It's Lady Dottie & The Diamonds

It's been 5 years since Lady Dottie & The Diamonds released their debut. Why didn't I get the memo? Have you been listening to this record since 2008 and keeping it all to yourself?

Well, if you woke up wanting to hear what Ruth Brown backed by The MC5 might sound like, here it is.

World Boogie, Baby!

"I spent all morning writing today's post and Blogger ate it."

-Steve Simels

"Yep!"

-Sal Nunziato

Please watch the EPK posted above. It explains part of what I was writing about before Blogger sucked it and my soul into its heartless space of cyber. I went on to say something about how I've been listening to the North Mississippi All-Stars since their 2000 debut and for all this time, I've liked but never loved what the sons of legendary producer and Memphis madman Jim Dickinson laid down on record. I love what they're about, but they just never nailed it, though 2005's "Electric Blue Watermelon" almost did.

But now there is "World Boogie Is Coming." This is it! Luther & Cody Dickinson nailed it in a big way.

Released in September, this is proof of just how exciting music can be.

If you think you don't need to hear another version of "Rollin' & Tumblin'" or another groove on "Casino Boogie," think again. Listen to this loud and you will get lost. One song is more creative than the next. The love for southern country blues and funk oozes from the grooves.

(First draft was much better, damn it!)
