The Grammys; Quickly

Good to see Whitney Houston all cleaned up. I've heard Foster Brooks slur less.

Raphael Saadiq's brilliant release "The Way I See It," gets bumped for Jennifer Hudson's self-titled 2008 release. (insert tasteful joke about tragedy beating art here)

I think "The Footles" is a much better joke than Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson's lame "Beatles Fighters" quip after announcing the Paul McCartney/Dave Grohl collaboration.

BUT

"Please welcome the star of 'The Mentalist," Simon Baker" is even funnier than "The Footles."

The Chris Martin and Jay Z duet brought me back to the days of Sandler & Young. Did you feel it?

Is it me, or does "I Don't Even Know His Last Name" by Carrie Underwood top the douche-chill meter.

Last night I got served a little bit too much of that poison baby
Last night I did things I'm not proud of
And I got a little crazy
Last night I met a guy on the dance floor
And I let him call me baby

And I don't even know his last name

Oh, my mama would be so ashamed

It started off "Hey cutie, where ya from?"
And then it turned in, "Oh no, what have I done?"
And I don't even know his last name

We left the club right around three o'clock in the morning

His Pinto sitting there in the parking lot
Well it should have been a warning

I had no clue what I was getting into

So I blame it on the Cuervo

Oh where did my manners go?

(Props though, for using the word "Pinto")

"Performing for the first time ever, Miley Cyrus and Taylor Swift."

Has anyone else been waiting as long as I have for this? I mean, they've been on the scene for over 2 years now.

FAVE LINE OF THE EVENING
Robert Plant after winning for "Rich Woman," his duet with Alison Krauss:
"This is a spooky song. It is the heart of the American underground of blues and shimmy."

I'm not sure I should have laughed at "Together again, Blink 182," but I did. Out loud.

Radiohead, a band I still can't quite understand post "OK Computer," contributed the most exciting 4 minutes of the night.

"Performing for the first time ever, T.I. & Justin Timberlake."

Again with the "for the first time ever" crap. This wasn't a reunion of "The Sunshine Boys." Relax.

I also enjoyed 1 Top, Duke Fakir, with Smokey and Ne-Yo doing a fine job on vocals, paying tribute to the late great 3 Tops Levi Stubbs, Lawrence Payton, and Obie Benson. Now can someone tell me how much longer we need to wait for Jamie Foxx's last second of his 15 minutes?

Another fine Grammy Award telecast.

"The most exciting night in music," my ass.

I knew I didn't have to watch the Grammys because you would write about it and make me happy I didn't watch it. So thank you. A fine job as always.

- I really liked the U2 performance. My highlight. Energetic opening to a show that wasn't able to maintain it.
- I agree with you on Radiohead but performance was pretty cool because it was so out there.
- Why did they crowbar Jay-Z into Lost? Did his rap have anything to do with the song?
- Isn't rap bankrupt at this point? Nobody raps with rhythm. It seems as they shouting out run-on sentences without any attempt at syncopation. And will somebody pull up Li'l Wayne pants. Can M.I.A. be called black trash or is that racist? Pregnant women wearing see-through clothing should be outlawed.
- Paul was fine but the song choice was kind of lame considering the catalog. Extra points for dating a hot old babe with money and 2 legs.
- I hate Jamie Foxx! Although I have to admit he is a good actor.
- I love Carrie Underwood's legs.
- I did like Adele's performance. The one where she hugged Estelle when accepting her award. 'Chasing Pavements' was good as well.
- Time does not like Robert Plant.
- Should men pushing 70 be wearing diamond earrings like mom used to wear? Should any man?
- Most cringe inducing moment was the Jonas Brothers and Stevie Wonder. I know he's blind but is he going deaf as well? Boy did he get big! He's getting close to Aretha territory.
- You knew Kraus and Plant were going to win Album of the Year. At least they threw Coldplay a couple of bones.

Jonas Bros. should be slapped poor Stevie must have missed JayZ and Justin Timberlake, because I only saw Kanye and Justin doin' a duet....or was I on acid LOL. It could have been worse, I guess.

I know a dead nominee is always the sentimental favorite, but it was nice to see that George Carlin won for Comedy Album. He is missed.
(That category also had Harry Shearer's "Songs of the Bushmen" — definitely worth hearing.)

No comments re the show; never watch it.

The Grammys were on here in Sweden, but mercifully after bedtime. That would have been enough to spare me from watching the telecast, but to be honest, I just forgot. I did see some of the skits on You Tube, so as long as your asking, here goes.

Carrie Underwood, it wasn’t the tequila that had you ending up embarrassing your mother. It was the gauzy dress that was almost see-through, cut just below your asscheeks with the Fk-me heels. Not that there’s anything wrong with that. I will also cast my vote for a great guitar lead, but would anybody have said anything if the guitarist wasn’t a woman? One thing it does show. America…there’s a ton of great players in this world. Final thought on this…is Nashville moving to OZ?

Katy Perry not only kissed a girl, she may have kissed her “career” goodbye, as well. Katy, don’t let the door hit your, uh, bananas on the way out.

Saw a funny quote about how Miley Cyrus is every bit as talented as her Dad. Ouch! That “duet” with Taylor Swift was such caterwauling. Forget Bush, if it were an old Looney Tune, someone would have been throwing shoes at them.

Everybody complains about the mix. Look, you’re trying to bring subtlety to sounds that are being made in a barn by many, many different artists while a clock is ticking off seconds. Anyone who has seen how long the sound check takes for one band in a Forum-like arena knows that those professionals are doing a pretty damn good job.

Finally, someone else said that age wasn’t good to Robert Plant. Not just to him, pal. Not to any of us.
