"Live From Daryl's House" : THE WEEKEND MIX
Elvis Costello's "Spectacle" has taken up quite a bit of space on the pages of BURNING WOOD, including two WEEKEND MIXES. It's debut and subsequent run last year on the Sundance Channel seemed to have hit the nerves of more than just Costello fans.
But another show, just slightly under the radar as it is an internet-only broadcast, has also gotten me smiling like a mental patient. It is Daryl Hall's Live From Daryl's House.
I'm not sure Daryl Hall knew what he himself had gotten into with this venture. The debut seemed a bit more than loose, as the band played old and new songs, in a front porch acoustic style, while Daryl talked awkwardly into the camera. Musically it was fantastic, but as a monthly show, it needed some polish. 20 episodes later, and Daryl Hall has created a brilliant showcase for old and new artists alike, not to mention his still stunning voice.
A new episode airs on the 15th of every month from Daryl's house in upstate NY. He and his band, along with that week's guests, cook, eat, drink wine, share musical war stories and road stories, and play each other's material, as well as some choice covers. But the secret weapon of this show is the special guest himself.
With each month's announcement of who would be appearing, my jaw dropped further to the floor. If it wasn't someone I had never heard of--Company Of Thieves, Chromeo, Monte Montgomery---it was someone I didn't care for---The Bacon Brothers, Ray Manzarek & Robbie Krieger, KT Tunstall. Like magic, or thanks to the keen ear of a vet like Mr. Hall, every one of these artists had something to give, and more often than not, were the highlight of the episode, not the time-fillers.
Kudos to Daryl Hall and a brilliant first season.
This WEEKEND'S MIX is a collection of some of my favorite moments.
If the response is good, there will be a part two.

You know, I have a standard joke -- Michael Bolton is the kind of singer that makes you really appreciate Darryl Hall.
But this sounds non-snarkable. Hell, the fact that he's doing "You're a Big Boy Now" is reason for him to get respect from all who walk upright.
Steve,
I've made no apologies over being a longtime Hall & Oates fan. But I have always understood why so many fail to give them street cred. (Well, Oates has always been pointless to me, but whatever) THE MTV YEARS! H&O's hits have always been their worst material.
If you never have, you must listen to "Abandoned Luncheonette" and the H&O/Todd & Utopia "War Babies."
Possibly one of the biggest Daryl fans in the UK and on the planet - agree with all the above
I have been a fan of Hall & Oates forever. I have gone to many of their concerts (and still do) I never miss Daryl's internet show..it is wonderful that this usually private man has let people into his home and life. The show and it's guest are very entertaining and after all these years, Daryl is better then ever..
It's a wonderful show and it's great to see how versatile Daryl Hall is as he masterfully bounces back and forth between each guests musical styles. Chuck Prophet was one of my favorites as well. Travis McCoy's visit showed just how wonderful music can be when 2 artists from different genres sync. I'd have to say my favorite song so far from the LFDH series is from Episode 5 with KT Tunstall. "If Only" was one of those moments in time that can never be duplicated. They tried on Conan O'Brien's show and failed to recreate the magic of that moment. It was 3 minutes of pure musical bliss.
As Daryl's #1 UK fan, in fact #1 fan on the planet, agree with all of the above...
Big H&O fan here. Like the weekend mix idea.
Love LFDH! Such a great idea!
Great Blog. Daryl Hall sure is on a winner. Love the Live from Daryl's House Weekend mix.
By the way: How do you get an Mp3 without all the talk & chit chat?
Do you need a special tool or equipment?
Anyway don't know how you did it but it is really great. Looking forward to more great music.
Keep up the good work
Holland says: Keep up the good work, Daryl!
Any chance of these performances (notably the one with manzarek and Krieger) being released on CD ????
I have heard nothing about these performances being released. There are some tracks available on iTunes, but it seems random.
One show a month makes it a can't miss event. I can't decide if it is a guilty pleasure or the best TV show, broadcast or not.
Thanks - I've been a Huge H&O fan for years, more H than O but still. Thanks for sharing, would love to see a part 2 if possible.
George, if you search the blog, there is the audio of the full Daryl & Todd Rundren episode. Thanks for the note, and I will work on a Part 2 compilation. Good idea.
Sal -- can I add my voice to those adding for a Volume 2? This was SUCH a pleasure -- this is the kind of stuff that blogs are so good at: putting out stuff that you can't buy. Love it. I'm an unapologetic Hall & Oates fan... liking them more and more as I get older, in fact.
Ok, gonna get Volume 2 up this week.
There is this, as well:

Somehow I missed the two Live at Daryl posts. Is there any chance that I can get a re-up? Thanks so much.
JD,
I found four Daryl zips and all have been updated. Dig in.
Thanks so much!
