Todd On Monday: Todd Rundgren & Ian Hunter, Live 1980

According to Wikipedia, Ian Hunter toured as Todd Rundgren's guitarist for 11 East Coast shows in 1980.

Really?

I saw 7 East Coast shows in 1980 and I only remembered Ian being at one, a benefit for the Boat People at NYC's Palladium, and it wasn't as Todd's guitarist. He was just a performer, a special guest. So, I looked up that Boat People benefit, and the info I found said that Todd played a solo set.

I'M SO CONFUSED!

I did find this, with a lot of help from Frank B.

The show:

A benefit for John Anderson's presidential campaign, live at Cleveland's Agora, 10/20/80.

Here's the band:

Todd Rundgren (guitar, vocals)
Ian Hunter (guitar, piano, vocals)
Tom Mandel (keyboards)
Stephen Dees (bass)
Michael Shrieve (drums)

Special appearance by Mick Ronson.

This show oozes energy, even if the Beatles' cover is a bit misguided.

Enjoy, please. And if any of you Toddheads can clarify the touring info, please send in your cards and letters.

oh MAN, this is so cool! what a great show, great sound quality love it. And Sal, I hear you about the new Todd box set, but I'm a freak for this stuff, I bought it the day it came out. Can't resist having it all in one place like that in high quality, and the packaging is nice too.

Long Live Todd!!

Thanks for your great post! I saw Rundgren and Hunter & company play a John Anderson benefit concert in Buffalo, NY (actually a suburb of Buffalo, called Cheektowaga) on 10/22/80. It was the 1st of 2 shows that night, the final performances of the tour. This sure brought back memories...

I was at the Tampa show at The Agora Ballroom.
John Lennon was murdered that night.
No one spoke a word on our hour long ride home.

Great post.

I was at the show
in DC October 10, 1980 at the Ontario Theater. It was a John Anderson Benefit.

Like you, I was confused.
Who would open?

The answer was that no one did.

Ian and Todd played with the same band. They would play a Rundgren or Utopia or Nazz song, then alternate with Ian's solo material or one from Mott. They alternated like that, back and forth, the entire set.

Both were on stage at the same time, playing on each others material, playing in each others band.

Yes, it was awesome.

Thanks for posting this. I saw this tour at a club (I think it was Uncle Sam's) in Buffalo, but don't recall the date.

I too was at that show at the cleveland agora, there were fans from both camps, but todd pretty much owns cleveland, the first side of back to the bars was recorded at the same club, the anderson benefit was a high octane show, the boys were buzzed and having fun, and then mick ronson shows up and the place went ballistic! ah, good times!

There was also a John Anderson benefit show at the Agora Ballroom in Hallandale, Florida. (There were supposed to be two performances on the same night, but they ended up combining them as one performer--can't now remember which--was complaining of throat problems.) A special guest drummer sat in on a Rundgren song, but I was never sure who it was--possibly Willie Wilcox?
