To me the concept of over-souling goes back to the 1970s when The Gong Show was just about the biggest rage on TV and when every singer who go on to sing a soul song would guarantee themselves a thirty of they just peeled the paint of the wall with a high notes.

I remember seeing Etta James at the SF Jazz Festival - probably 1998 or so. Between songs, she was talking about all these new singers she was hearing, how they were all being referred to as "divas."

She said, "these people don't know a diva from a beava'".
