A bonus feature from the above DVD, is a 15 track, vocals-only program, where you can hear The Temptations in vivid detail, sans The Funk Brothers. One song is more astonishing than the next, and currently I am fixated on this one. I'll let it speak for itself.
There is (or used to be -- haven't looked in a while) a similarly jaw dropping clip on YouTube of Smokey and the Miracles "Tracks of My Tears" sans the band, i.e. just vocals.
In any case, that Temps tracks is great -- thanks.
This is wonderful. It made me imagine the Temptations hanging at a BBQ, waiting for the burgers to be done and just busting into song. In other words, had an intimate feel to it. Ok, I'm strange but I think we've already established that. See, this is the kind of crap you get when you ask people to comment more;) Carry on.
Totally agree...this is a revelation. Picked it up during the winter and 'I Wish It Would Rain has already appeared on a mix cd for me. That says a lot. Funny, I can still feel the Funk Brothers' pulse, almost as a ghost of intention, driving each song or creating the soothe that kept the Tempts such a vital force in Motown's stable..
If you poke around the web, there's a large file of numerous Motown tracks mixed down to just vocals. Some are better than others. Those Temptations songs are phenomenal, using both the lead and vocal backing tracks. A lot of the tracks on this larger collection are just lead vocal tracks, which is disorienting when you have the song memorized and know where the backing vocals should be. And a lot have backing-track bleed-through, which ruins some of them also as the volume of the instruments is low, but perfectly audible.
But every now and then ... the Marvin Gaye tracks (for me What's Going On and Got to Give It Up), My Cherie Amour and What Becomes of the Broken Hearted are stunning in these "just vocal" versions.
