His Aim Is True. Really. It is.

The Return Of The Spectacular Spinning Songbook!!! is a 3-disc (CD, DVD, 10" vinyl EP) live box set, recorded over a 2-night stand at The Wiltern in Los Angeles on May 11 and 12, 2011. Limited to 1500 copies worldwide, each set is individually numbered with a special commemoration card autographed by Elvis Costello. This super deluxe package includes a 40-page hardcover book packed with candid photos, a tour diary of Costello's musings from each tour stop, a 20" x 30" concert tour poster and a limited edition postcard.

The CD was recorded from both nights' performances at the Wiltern, shows which The Los Angeles Times called "the kind of uniquely invigorating experience that warrants a buzzword all its own: inspiring." The DVD is from Costello's show on May 12, 2011, and includes a special guest appearance by the Bangles, plus bonus footage including behind-the-scenes moments captured with the Imposters as well as extra performances not included in the main set of the show. The 10-inch vinyl record features four songs only available in this set.

All this is housed in a lavish box with a working spinning replica of "The Spectacular Spinning Songbook" on the front cover! Only 1500 copies were printed and autographed so don't miss out.

($251.55, and you don't even get a full show. Not even on the DVD. Otherwise, you know....)

Indeed. I'll wait for the cheap(er) version.

Otherwise, another big pass on ridiculously overpriced and unnecessary bait for the obsessive collector. Isn't there enough EC music and video out there already? When is enough, enough. It boggles.

For those with the extra shekels to throw away, I say Mazaltov! Me, I'll go out and have a nice dinner with the wife and spend half as much.

But you get a "Spinning Wheel."

I love the man but you know what he can spin on!

One of my all-time favorites, but he sure has been doing a lot of fan-boning recently. Jeez...

Ah, I don't know, I don't really have a problem with this. It's a limited edition thing designed for only a few fans with enough money in their wallets. In a world where nobody is buying music anymore, I think to offer something special like this isn't a bad way to go. I do think the price point is too high, but this isn't for everybody.

And besides, the SSS was a hell of a show.

It must be nice to have that kind of disposable income. I forgot what it's like...

@Bill.

Here's how I feel, not just about this set, but most sets like this.

The only people who really care about them are the diehards. No one else.

NO casual Elvis fan who possibly even saw the Spinning Songbook show is buying this, even at $100. So it's the long time fans that are, as Bruce H. said, getting boned.

The "lim. ed." label means nothing these days. (See Rhino Handmade.)

At the very least, give us a complete show for the odious amount of money. I still couldn't afford it, but it seems less obnoxious.

Beyond Belief! I suspect the "director's cut" DVD will be released in about 6 months. Ugh.

You have a point, Sal.

The word is he will be putting the music out next year in cheaper formats, so ultimately the people will be able to get their hands on it and pay for it if they so desire. So you have a super-expensive version for the super rich fans and then the regular formats for the rest of us.

On a separate but related note, besides all the screwing around with the archive shows, I'm surprised Elvis hasn't released more live albums. He puts on a good show and he's toured with a number of different kinds of bands. Instead, we have 4 versions of the same show (El Mocambo, bonus disk for My Aim Is True, bonus disk for This Year's Model, and Live at Hollywood High). They screwed the pooch just when the shows were about to get interesting.

As heinous as the $250 price tag is, I'm more offended by how little music is being offered. EC is a Dead fan. Has he never heard of Dick's Picks? Even cheap versions in 2012 won't make me feel better about an incomplete show when the technology is there for so much more.
