Rock & Roll Suicide

I didn't believe it then and I still don't believe it now.

Y'know, I must confess to having had a life-long thing for Dinah. Since I was a kid, back in the day when she was blowing the audience a kiss at the end of singing "See the USA in your Chevrolet."

I think it's because she was a nice Jewish Southern girl, a combination I find irresistible apparently.

I particularly love the flowers-and-encyclopedias decorated set. Such warmth mixed with authority...

In my imagination the clip continues with David karate fighting Nancy Walker... Dinah (or rather DINAH!) and Henry provide commentary concerning the similarities between hand-to-hand combat and entertainment...

Hard to listen to Stay without Slick...it was his lick tho DB didn't give him writing credit. Who is that on guitar in this clip?

Stacey Heydon. Slick didn't do that tour, so Heydon took over and ended up on "Low."

Dinah was one of the only woman singer in the 30s and 40s to go her own way, without being attached to a Big Band. She seemed to have been well liked by her peers, and was quite the attraction to men like Krupa, Jimmy Stewart, George Patton and then in later years with men much her junior like Burt Reynolds.
It was rumored she had a long affair with Sinatra in the 50s and this video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qJ2aEqXyCz0) will bear out, at least, a good friendship.
As an interviewer, she seemed generally interested in her guests as people, not just entertainers. With Bowie, there was no Steve Allen ridicule or Jack Paar and Dick Cavet smugness. While she didn't know a lot about him she wasn't silly like Mike Douglas and his guests.

Dinah always was an entertainer I would have liked to have been a friend to. Plus she played golf, so she had that going for her.

Great album, great song. The Davy Jones serpentine dancing, however...

Nice to see Bowie doing the Soupy Sales Shuffle! Isn't this the period in his life when Bowie admitted being so coked up he couldn't remember anything? How else to explain appearing on the Dinah Shore Show and on Bing Crosby's Christmas Special? Dinah was a hottie, I like the psychedelic graphics.

Wonderful stuff. Part of why I think 1972-'76 (yep, just before punk & disco) might be my favorite half-decade of music ever. At least in terms of live performance. There seemed to be a feeling then of "anything goes, I'm already making a truckload of money doing that so let's try this and let it all hang out." I dig it.
