"The Burning Love? Clever Cover Project" : THE WEEKEND MIX
I followed your lead and tossed in a few that are near and dear. I'm confident that the majority fit the bill for "clever," and the few that don't are too good to pass up.
I love them all, with extra special nods going to Siouxsie & Budgie as The Creatures for their unexpected big band take on Herbie Mann's instrumental, Joan Osborne for recognizing the brilliance of Don Van Vliet, Jason Falkner for building (just a little) on each verse of Joni's folk classic and creating a power pop classic and Frank Zappa & The Mothers pre-"Freak Out" basement version of Marvin Gaye's hit.
Enjoy!

Thanks for an excellent mix as usual. Richard Thompson's clever deconstruction/reconstruction of the Britney tune is a particular fave of mine, and the Johnny Cash & Sandy Denny versions always bring a tear to a jaded old eye. Cheers!
