"Squeeze: Under The Radar" : THE WEEKEND MIX

I finally got around to watching the recent Squeeze BBC documentary "Take Me, I'm Yours."

Holy Moly!

What a phenomenal 60 minutes. It moved me to tears more than once. Just two brilliant artists continuing to be brilliant. It's a must-see and it's right up top if you have the time.

That doc also put me in the mood for a bit of a Squeeze music marathon and during this marathon I thought about how just how many of my favorite D&T tunes were not the usual choices.

If you're a casual Squeeze fan, these may all be new to you. If you're a bigger fan than that, maybe you'll enjoy this selection, as well as adding to it. I've included 4 songs from the absolutely wonderful and criminally forgotten 1991 release "Play," a record you must have NOW!

So here they are.

Came home from work and turn on the computer and up pops a Squeeze mix. Can't wait to listen to this. Thank you for this mix. One question about Squeeze, what year did Squeeze tour with Elvis Costello? I am thinking it was around 1981 but wondered if you might know for sure.

1981 sounds right. Pretty sure of it.

Can't wait to listen to this. Squeeze had kind of fell out of my listening habits for way to long. Thank you for redirecting me to them. One quick question for you. Do you remember what year Squeeze and Elvis and the Attractions toured together? Can't remember if it was '81 or '82. Anyway thanks again for the mix.

Must have been after Elvis produced East Side Story for them. That would have been '81 then.

And, Squeeze are pictured on the inner sleeve of EC's "Trust," which was 1981.

Thanks Sal.

One of those hidden realities in the music world is that the "post-fame" records by Squeeze have been very, very good. Not as great as their best (not much is), but still very worthwhile.

If you are/were a fan and still like that kind of clever pop music, start picking em up.

Wow. Thank you Sal!
Always been one of those "casual fans" ... thought Squeeze was a bit "too clever" like Steely Dan or 10cc, which has always turned me off a bit (though I love em all up to a point). BUT I just watched the documentary, and was very moved. EVERYONE in and around the band was so nice, human, and generous to one another.
I'm off to listen to it all again for the first time in a long time, and, in a sense, for the first time ever
Thank you!

I have always loved this band! I really don't think they have made a bad record and "Play" is right up there. There concert at Roseland back in April was one of this year's best (and props to the English Beat for a sweet opening set). I'll watch this over the weekend.

Always very fond of F-Hole and There's No Tomorrow from East Side Story. They were brilliant!

Thanks for the mix - very Squeezable! I'm lucky enough to have seen them back in their "heyday" as well as some more recent solo acoustic stuff. I'm a sucker for the storytelling, clever lyrics & damn fine tunes. Nice!

Thank you! Loving the Weekend Mix. Like much of the world, after about 1983 Squeeze fell of the map for me. And as you've proven here, regrettably so. In a similar wrongful absence vein, the website Birds With Broken Wings has done a nice compilation of Garland Jeffreys. http://birdswithbrokenwings2.blogspot.com/

I know nothing about Squeeze, so I'm downloading to find out.

Don't forget the solo albums from Difford and Tilbrook over the last few years. I was especially surprised by Difford -- while I knew he'd have literate/funny/interesting lyrics, I was surprised by the music, figuring Tilbrook was more responsible for their melodicism -- I guess not! I wasn't expecting him to handle the lead vocalist role, but he surely has. His acoustic album of Squeeze covers, really works, too.

Thanks! I've long had the compilation (Singles 45 and Under) and it amazes me, but I've never searched out much else - this is just what I need!
