Inspired, indeed. Two of my favorite artists (Shuggie and South) back to back, and one of the most moving Kinks songs, all bookended by "Ace(s) of Spades"? This one looks magnificent.
Many thanks, Sal!

If it's Friday it must be another weekend mix! Thanks for the usual eclectic delectations: a sadly missed Joe South; a Kinks track as good as any; and was I the only one who bought the Hotlegs album or the only one who'll admit it? Have a good one!

Looks nice! Always enjoy these. And thanks so much for including a digital of the Dylan b-side... of course, I bought a vinyl copy on last year's RSD, but don't have it as an iPod-able version until now. Thanks a lot!

Hey Sal, I was just listening to the new Rod Stewart that you wrote about a couple weeks back and the thought occurred to me: Is Rod just trolling Dylan now?
The song's refrain 'Beautiful Morning With You' is very similar to the refrain of "New Morning". The song has a thumpier beat, but still.
Plus, he even throws in a cover of "Corrina, Corrina"!
After all the fuss about "Forever Young", I couldn't help but notice. Your thoughts?

Scott - I for one LOVE that "Corrina Corrina" cover. But check it out - there's another new version of that and it might be even better - just noticed Boz Scaggs has just covered it and it's niiiiiice:

Oh, I like the album, too. Best he's done since the late '70's, early '80's, IMO.
A lot of folks have covered "Corrina"; Pete Townsend covered it on that Amnesty International album from a coupla years ago.
I just thought it sounded similar; Did you?
Anyways, just thank god he stopped doing those standards albums.

Rod's Corrina is really great. He may very well be channeling Bob. I didn't notice but I wasn't looking either. Best Corrina? The Rising Sons.

Also, after reading Rod's book, it's apparent he doesn't feel like we do about those godawful standards records.

@dogbreath, I'll cop to buying the Hotlegs album, too, for a pretty shameful reason (we used "Neanderthal Man" as the theme music for one of my fellow d.j.s at our high school radio station). What surprises me today, hearing this track again, is how similar it is to "Ompopo," the amazing pre-Hotlegs track they did as Crazy Elephant. Those guys (can I call them "5c"?) have had amazing careers.

@sal, my wife roped me into watching Rod's Christmas concert on TV last Dec and it was amazing how candid he was about tossing off that album, recording his parts in his garage, complete with passing auto and airplane noise, in a couple days. Cynical cash-grab, Rod?

Julian Cope's Peggy Suicide is one of the best albums of the past 20 years.
