So Much For That
If you haven't heard by now, Ozzy Osbourne, Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler and the drummer from Rage Against The Machine are set to release the first new Black Sabbath music in...I don't know...whatever. Rick Rubin's big head and beard were there to oversee the proceedings. Bill Ward, the Sab's original drummer declined to take part in the reunion because of something he didn't like with the contract, though my feeling is at this point he probably plays the drums like Little Ricky.
Why am I being so snarky about all of this?
Because I was really looking forward to "13." Really. I'm a fan, and stupidly had high hopes. It's awful. Funny, awful. Like, "HAHAHAHAH, I can't believe this shit" awful.
I'm thinking it went down like this--
Rick Rubin:
Write a song that sounds like "War Pigs." And maybe one that sounds like "Black Sabbath." No Ozzy, the song, not the band. And maybe one that sounds like "Into The Void." They don't have to be as good, just do it. Okay? Come back Ozzy, not this second. I mean, for the new record.
I understand wanting to recreate the original magic, and would I have been happier if the new Sabbath record was a techno/dance record? Of course not. But there is nothing here at all. The Rutles would have written better Black Sabbath songs.
Damnit.

I'm sorry Tommy has cancer. His riffing and tone has always been the redeeming factor.
I smoked my first joint with my friend's sister in her room to the sound of "Masters Of Reality". Immediately afterwards big brother barged in and said, "I know what you're doing in here! I'm telling Mom!" Then I went home to mow the neighbors yard. Total buzz kill.
Listening to "God Is Dead?" was just as bad.
Black Sabbath can't possibly work at this point. They are a cartoon.
20 year old dudes get away with raw stupidity a lot better than guys in their late 60's. They should know better by now.
And Rick Rubin is so "'90's".
Woof. I got nuthin' else.
It's really sad Tony has cancer. It's some kind of rare form called lymphoma. But, from the way I hear it, he's not letting it get the best of him. Black Sabbath just has to schedule their tours around his treatments. But, the world would be lost without Tony. He looks like such a sweet guy, although sometimes he looks downright intimidating.
I may not listen to Black Sabbath, although I've never been able to figure out if "Crazy Train" was an Ozzy song or Black Sabbath song. I'm not dissing these guys; they rock!!!!
And I don't think it should matter how old guys are, some guys can rock at any age. Look at the Rolling Stones, most of them are in their 60s and their still rocking. I believe Black Sabbath still has that creative fire in them and they just need to keep it burning. They are being discovered by new generations :D
Damnit--and I'm going to see them at the Arts Center.
Just listened to "God Is Dead?" So woozy, must sleep...zzzzz.
