Sid 'n' Susie Volume 3

I quite liked the first two volumes of covers from Matthew Sweet & Susanna Hoffs, though a recent spin of Volume 2 wasn't as much fun as the first time I heard it. I think Matthew should sing more. Susanna growling at the beginning of the Raspberries "Go All The Way" makes me laugh every time.

Volume 3 should hit on November 12 I'm not loving this set list.

Check out "Our Lips Are Sealed" HERE.

The full track list for "Under the Covers, Vol. 3" includes:
1.      Sitting Still (R.E.M.)
2.      Girls Talk (Dave Edmunds)
3.      Big Brown Eyes (The dB's)
4.      Kid (Pretenders)
5.      Free Fallin’ (Tom Petty)
6.      Save It For Later (The English Beat)
7.      They Don’t Know (Kirsty MacColl)
8.      The Bulrushes (The Bongos)
9.      Our Lips Are Sealed (The Go-Go’s)
10.   How Soon Is Now (The Smiths)
11.   More Than This (Roxy Music)
12.   Towers of London (XTC)
13.   Killing Moon (Echo and the Bunnymen)
14.   Trouble (Lindsey Buckingham)
Bonus Tracks on iTunes Deluxe Version:
* Train in Vain (the Clash)
* You’re My Favorite Waste of Time (Marshall Crenshaw)
* I Would Die 4 U (Prince)

To tie in with yesterdays "Self-Portrait" thread; "I would buy an album of Susanna Hoffs breathing hard"

The Crenshaw song is reason enough for me to get this.

Hello all...no, please remain seated.

You again?!?!

Hell...I'm with you, funk-soul-bruvvah. Maybe one of you technically savvy kids out there could do a mashup of Susanna's panting over a barely-in-tune Keith riff from Dirty Work, and then the Mother Ship can just take us all home.

That said...I have the two previous versions of S&S and, like Sal, am like "meh" on the song selections for V3.

Well, could be interesting to hear them do Girl's Talk. And More Than This. Jeez...here we go again.

I would love for them to skip back to the 1950's on Vol. #4.

It could be a very interesting challenge to hear them tackle such an early era.

Also I would be less interested in hearing them explore the 90's.

I actually think this is a pretty eclectic collection. The Our Lips cover was a bit too straight, though.

I want to know what 10 additional bonus tracks will be on the Japanese release, though!

I think we are just all tired of "Free Fallin'", though so that sucks the life out of the track list...

There are a few songs in that list that I would really like to hear, others maybe not so much. I'm curious as to what everyone here thinks should have been included.
What 80s songs do you think would fit the concept and benefit from S&S treatment? I would have liked to see some Blondie, Crowded House, Cheap Trick, Squeeze, or Joe Jackson, as well as a couple of 80s one hit wonders. And of course, something from Dirty Work :)

Totally awesome list! Now they can get a sweet gig playing the junior prom!

I'm not a fan of either.
"Our Lips Are Sealed", doesn't exactly suck, but I spent the whole time comparing it to the original as it's practically note for note, and it came up short.

This version beats both of 'em.

Hello all...no, please remain seated,

OK...Sal. I just spent 50 seconds of my lunch break watching the video link you provided. Thank god I had no food in my mouth...I would have needed a Heimlich maneuver and that wouldn't have been very dignified in an office situation.

To quote steve simels...words fail.

RichD

PS...Troy, buddy, I like the way you think. Winning Ugly, anyone?

Sal Nunziato said...

Sorry about your lunch break Rich, but I was serious. I prefer the Fun Boy 3 version.

I agree with Shriner, that Free Fallin' could well be a drag, but not a bad 80s list overall. Also interested in people's ideas for better songs. Three I'll throw out:
I Got You - Split Enz
Wall of Death - Richard Thompson
Here Comes Your Man - The Pixies.

To expand on my earlier comment, I think S&S could really shine on:

Blondie - Dreamin
Crowded House - Something So Strong
Cheap Trick - Everything Works if you Let It or Voices
Squeeze - Pulling Mussels or Annie Get Your Gun
Joe Jackson - Steppin Out or It's Different for Girls

Some one-hit wonders:
Martin Briley - Salt in My Tears
Til Tuesday - Voices Carry
The Vapors - Turning Japanese

And the obligatory Dirty Work song:
One Hit (To the Body)

Curious as to what other songs you all think we could hope for as the Japanese bonus tracks...

I like Allen Rosenberg's idea of hearing these two do the 50s. How about "Old Cape Cod" by Patti Page? Aaaahh.

But I'll play the 80s game:

Don't You Want Me-Human League
Whistle Down The Wind- Nick Heyward
It's My Life- Talk Talk
The Bitterest Pill- The Jam

Agree about Vol 2 Sal. Tracklist looks great, now waiting to spend a fortune on the extra tracks in different versions a la last time.

Hello all...no, please remain seated,

Sal #1: ooooh...awkward. Sorry, dude.

Finchy: Wall of Death? Great selection for those 2.

Troy: ditto for Voices Carry.

Sal#2: definitely making up for your questionable selection earlier (see Sal#1)

My suggestion? Me Myself I from Joan "I don't nearly get the love I deserve" Armatrading. There. I feel better.

RichD

Your Joan Armatrading pull is genius! 5 more like that and you're off the hook for Fun Boy Three.

How about...ready..."Heartbeat"- King Crimson?

Actually Sal I was thinking along the lines of Everly Brothers, Bo Diddley or a 5 Royales ballad.

Though a 50's American Song Book standard is an interesting idea.

Well Allan, volumes 1-2 are all over the place. Raspberries, Grateful Dead, Bread, Derek & The Dominoes. We could sneak a Patti Page tune alongside an Everlys.

Sal Nunziato said...

The Plimsouls- A Million Miles Away

Paul McCartney-Getting Closer

Tears For Fears-Everybody Wants To Rule The World

Stevie Nicks & Tom Petty- Stop Draggin My Heart Around

Stevie Nicks & Don Henley- Leather & Lace

How about Lucinda's "Just Wanna See You So Bad"

How about TPOH "She's so Young", Marshall Crenshaw's "Somewhere Down the Line" and I think Susie would kill "Fade Away" from the "River"

Sal Nunziato said...

Fade Away!

Troy, you're in luck for one of your picks - they already covered 'Dreaming' in Vol. 2 (as a bonus track).

Sal, I like your Jam pick. Sticking with the Jam, I think 'Monday' would be an ideal song for them. How can they ignore the Jam?

Finchy

Sal Nunziato said...

I already hate this record because it has none of the songs we've mentioned.

Troy said...

Love the suggestions for Fade Away and Bitterest Pill! And Sal, I had the Tears for Fears song on my list but dropped it at the last minute. Good call.

@Finchy, I knew that they did Dreaming on Vol 2 but blanked on it. No wonder I thought they would kill on it!

Couple more, just for fun:
Behind the Wall of Sleep - Smithereens
Kayleigh - Marillion
Lover - Michael Stanley Band
Full Moon Turn My Head Around - Off Broadway

I'm just fine with this new set list... and really, really enjoy the last two volumes of this series.
