Not Quite Sure About Cate Le Bon...Yet
Not Sandy Denny, not by a long shot. But still there is something about this song that feels like her. Musically, it could be a lost track from the Velvet Underground or Television. Taken from "Mug Museum," the new record from Cate Le Bon, "Are You With Me Now" has charmed the pants off of me.
The rest of the record has some moments as well, though Le Bon's voice is paper-thin and occasionally sabotages a few really interesting arrangements, such as the hymn-like and truly bizarre "I Think I Knew" and the equally creepy "Wild," where Le Bon puts on her best Siouxsie Sioux.
I'm not sure what a few more passes through this record will make me think, but right now, "Mug Museum" is keeping me busy.

Yes.
Please tell me she's not you know who's kid. I already feel old enough this morning...
Nope. Not "his" kid.
Whew. :-)
struggling with who she reminds me of; the closest i can come up with is Natalie Merchant lite (helped along by the Maniacs-like arrangement). Definitely not Sandy Denny.
no, wait, it's the Smoke Fairies
She doesn't sound like Sandy Denny of course. At first it is more like VU. However after I listened and walked away, the song kept playing in my head, and I did think of Sandy and even Fairport. There's a "feeling" it evokes that is Denny like, strangely folky even. Perhaps it is a song the great singer could have sung or wrote (with Lou Reed! That would be a dream team for me).
It's just evocative of her, her point of view. I like this, I like her. And now I'm in the mood for some Richard and Linda Thompson. :)
