The Weekend Mix, 4/4/14

Before we get to today's collection of songs, I just want to shout out to a long time reader, you know who you are, today's Song Of The Day is for you!

I'd also like to remind those reading within driving distance that this Sunday's Record Show should be a blast, assuming of course you like music and records and beer and bratwurst.

And now a little about The WM-

"Have you no shame or have you no shame?"  Man, I love that lyric.

Last September I caught The Wood Brothers opening for the Tedeschi-Trucks Band. A fantastic show with the highlight being Oliver Wood and Susan Tedeschi duetting on the Donnie McCormack tune "Have You No Shame." McCormack was the drummer for "Eric Quincy Tate," the band of swamp rockers produced by Tony Joe White. EQT never recorded this tune, and to my knowledge, neither did McCormack. This version is by the late Sean Costello and it is terrific.

I found an old disc of cover versions, many of which I had shared here before. Rather than put together another collection, I chose a handful that I hadn't heard in a long time, including the Macca cover that opens the set, Paul Collins chunky take on the early 70's hit by The Fortunes and  Kate & Cindy (of the B'52's) with their spirited take on the disco classic "Ain't No Stoppin' Us Now."

I wish I had a more comprehensive explanation for why these tunes come together other than "It sounds good all together," but I don't. This is simply the shit I hear in my head...you know...other than "the voices."

Enjoy!

I'm hoping that version of Junior's Farm is indeed the Macca song... if I had to only pick one Macca rocker, that might even be the one. Just love that song, and nobody ever talks about it...

Looking forward to the others, most of which I haven't heard.

And Embryonic Journey? What a song!

Worth hearing just for Joe Brown's version of "When I'm Dead & Gone" where he gives the ukulele a good plucking in contrast to McGuinness Flint's 1970 original which used the mandolin to good effect. Let's have more uke in rock I say! Thanks for the mix & enjoy the shortest two days of the week.
