The Weekend Mix, 12/26/14

I've been listening to a lot of Irma Thomas these last few days and it made me dig out some photos I took of both she and Mavis Staples in the Gospel Tent at the New Orleans Jazz Fest of 2009. Then, out of the blue, I get an e-mail from cmealha with an Irma tune attached. This would be the perfect time to roll out an Irma/Mavis Weekend Mix, right? Didn't happen. But we do get things started with a bit of Irma.

The rest just came together, as usual.

Didn't love The Empty Hearts record as much as I wanted to, but the tune included here is a fave. Another recent obsession is The Merry-Go-Round and Emitt Rhodes. Rhodes' self-titled debut is a cult classic, but the rest of his output is nothing to shake a stick at, and The Merry-Go-Round stuff is better than all of it. I think.

Enjoy the music.

Looks like a great mix. I'm curious about the Andy Partridge tune here. And man, yeah, Emmitt Rhodes - a number of under-the-radar musicians from the past have gotten a new cult following (Nick Drake's really started with the VW commercial, right?), but Emmitt continues to be under the radar. I got his 2-CD best of and just looooove it.

Nice photos from the Gospel Tent of two great ladies. I need to see Mavis live once more; saw her once at an Atlanta festival 15 years ago and she wasn't "back" yet or on her game yet; nowadays, she sure is.

Just digging out from three days of eating and drinking (not necessarily in that order!)

This mix is perfect for a catch up Saturday morning.

Ya gotta love Irma Thomas!

Thanks Sal.

Anything by Irma Thomas is a great way to start a mix! After all the noise, bickering & chaos of the past few days, I've been happily singing to myself that the only way I'm going to get any peace is (enter here title of McGuinness Flint tune). The last WM of 2014 is a tasty treat. Many thanks as always.

I'm with Rhod. I've never heard Thompson's cover of "She May Call You Up Tonight" -- very interesting to hear it without the baroque arrangement.

Happy New Year, Sal!

Dave and Rhod,

Saw RT a number of times, but one night, after covering "She May Call You Up Tonight," he offered this-

"One of my favorite albums of all time. I could play the whole thing right now, if you'd like."

He didn't and it's been haunting me ever since, as it is one of my faves of all time.

Okay Sal, have you been in my record collection again??!! Hahahaha. LOVE it. What could missing from a set with Irma (doing a Jackie deShannon song), Hollies, Pyjamarama, McGuiness=Flint (!!!)(who plays McGuinness-Flint??? Me!), the deep throated Lou Rawls, Complicated Shadows and All Things Must Pass. Top with, not one but two Left Banke songs. THE MERRY-GO-ROUND!!! My heart be still. "She May Call You Up Tonight" one of my very favorite songs, and when you see Richard Thompson, tell him I would love to sit around and listen to the Left Banke with him. The only thing missing might be…might be is a Big Star track. I leave my Big Star albums out next time you sneak down my basement, Sal. (Thanks!!! Happy New Year!!!)
