There is a telling moment at the end of Todd's incredibly heartfelt take of "Be Nice To Me", a live bonus track from one of the Runts. He has just bared his soul, but then takes it all back with a funny voice saying, "That was an appropriately paranoid song to start with", just completely destroying the moment. It's not funny. For me, that's the sign of an uneasy relationship with ones art, and a possible explanation for his EDM, fascination with ugly sounding technology, and "Running Bear" in his live set. That Jeff Lynne is comfortable with his past is not a bad thing.
This has been a point of contention for years. Here is part of a review I wrote about a 2013 Todd show:
"When I saw the first "unpredictable" shows in 2011 or 2012, it was a thrill to hear some oddball covers, like Clarence Carter's "Patches" or "96 Tears," by ? & The Mysterians. They were played straight, or at least as straight as Todd can be. Last night, it wasn't one or two covers, it was seven! And all of them were novelties. Johnny Preston's "Running Bear," "Muskrat Love" and the horrific "In The Year 2525." It wasn't that the performances of these songs were bad. On the other hand, they were as solid as anything else in the set. But I get the impression that Rundgren was taking the piss out of both the songs and the audience. Does he really like "Muskrat Love?" From the way he broke down the lyrics and pointed out that the songwriter "picked the wrong rodent to write about," I think not."
Watch both episodes of Live From Daryl's House with Todd, arguably the two best of the series. Todd sabotages almost every performance with some unnecessary quip, or at the worst moment, a yodel at the end of a stunning performance.
