I have spent all of my musical life never hearing a note by the band Gong. Many of you might be able to say the same thing. What makes it strange for me is that I am a fan of both Steve Hillage and Pierre Moerlen, particularly Hillage's first solo record, "Fish Rising," which sounds like an early Yes record if it had the oppportunity to explode into some aggressive jazz fusion, while never losing a sense of melody. And, Moerlen is the drummer. A monster drummer.
At the very top of this week's to-do list, is to listen to Gong's "Camembert Electrique." I am hoping to love it and open a window to a new catalogue of undiscovered music. But first, I must take "Fish Rising" out for one more spin. Prog and fusion isn't everybody's cup of tea, but if you have ever been a fan of Yes, King Crimson or the Mahavishnu Orchestra, I suggest giving "Fish Rising" a chance. It's all of those things and occasionally more.
