Today's Obsessions

When I am not trying to save the world, I obsess over music. Today, it's the kickass early career of Bob Seger and the ridiculous, but also kickass theme from the blaxploitation film, "Black Belt Jones."

Man, they don't make'em like this anymore.

That's all I've got.

Carry on.

Marlon,

Great minds!

I have a similar compilation that I've been listening to and I considered it for a Weekend Mix. You just did the work for me.

Thanks!

It's a crying shame these tracks do not have an official release. "East Side Story", "Persecution Smith", "Lookin' Back" -- even "Ballad of the Yellow Berets" -- all that early stuff should be released.

Think I missed seeing Black Belt Jones first time round or even ever. Oh well. And the Seger compilation is pretty good & touches the earlier Thin Lizzy post with the inclusion of his song "Rosalie" which (IMO) Lizzy made a standout track.

Can't figure why the early Seger/Seger System stuff has never (to my knowledge) been reissued. I had "Smokin' O.P.'s" on heavy rotation for most of 1974, which was a pretty dire year all around. I also really dug "Mongrel". Glad you gave it a mention.

The best I could come up with is that Seger was on one too many labels, so all of them have a stake in it. Even WB had their mitts in it. "Back In '72," one of his best, is the only release of his on WB. That's been in limbo forever.

Glad to see at least a mention of early Seger. "Smokin' O.P.'s" lived on heavy rotation in 1974, which I remember as a pretty dire year on several counts. Also thought "Mongrel" was a great album. Can't figure why the great stuff Seger/Seger System did in the early 70's never got reissued. A loss. He just lost me when he drifted into the still seas of MOR. Coulda been a great one. Shoulda kept that great B3 up front, and the MC3 attitude on hand.

Heavy Music is kick ass! Not a big fan but this is great. It's got great energy and his vocal is the best I've ever heard from him.
