"Time Of The Season": WEEKEND MIX

This Weekend Mix is actually two separate ideas, both of which are strictly to satisfy me.  I am hoping you get some pleasure out it.

The first idea was to somehow create a mix that literally flowed together. Quite often, I will hear two songs and think how perfectly they would sound back to back. Not just one after the other. I am talking crossfading, like a DJ. I have been wanting to do this since 1982, when I helped my friend Chris, DJ at Baruch College for WBAB. We inadvertently created a genius two-fer of The Beatles "You Can't Do That" followed by "Train In Vain" by The Clash, with the opening drum fill of the latter beginning before the last slide of the last chord of the former, and we both said, "WOW!" I just couldn't figure out how to do that with the basic machines I have at my disposal...until last week.

The second idea for the mix came about after battling with a very dear friend for what seems like an eternity. Mutual friends suggested to take some time off and cool down. But every time I heard a song, not unlike Woody Allen in "Radio Days," it triggered something else. Something I wanted to say. Something that was said to me. A place. An event. So, I thought, let me try to piece together a conversation using songs.

I came up with way too many songs for the latter idea, and not enough for the former. So what you have is a mix of the mixes. I suggest listening to this as a whole, for optimum effect. But know this: I can't expect you to sit through 70 minutes of music if you already know you're not a fan of half the playlist. Also, I don't expect any of you to quite appreciate my personal experience with many of these songs. But maybe you'll have some fun creating your own scenario. Finally, my "mixing" needs work, so be nice.

One last thing:

We lost the great Tommy Keene this week. I didn't get a chance to pay tribute on these pages, as I have been in my own world. But our friend Mr. Baez posted a beautiful, heartfelt tribute from Tommy's brother as a comment on the "Please Stand By" post. Or, you can just go to www.tommykeene.com.

Tommy Keene has been making some of the best music out there for years. A power pop god, an amazing guitar player and songwriter, and a lover of music. I put together a half dozen of my Tommy faves--4 originals and 2 covers--with my absolute fave closing out the mini mix. R.I.P., Tommy.

Thanks for your indulgence.

Hope ya dig the music.

The Walker Brothers are the only ones I'm not sure of. I haven't found a gateway into Scott, although I know he's a monumental talent, and a favorite of yours.
Maybe this is the right time.
Diving in.
Thanks!

Sal,

I completely understand the main mix. Ah, the power of song!

And the Tommy Keene is so great. I keep thinking I need to know his stuff better. This Sixpack is perfect.

Have a great weekend.

ha! Sid's "My Way" figures greatly in the Shepard Fairey documentary that's on Hulu. great way to start a mix!

Looking forward to listening to this over the weekend. Did want to call attention to the REM song, which I feel is a bit of a lost classic from an otherwise dreary album.

Thanks Sal!

Music is a good way of getting a lot of stuff out of your system, isn't it? Some tasty tunes in there. Works for me! Many thanks for mixing it all together for us. Have a great weekend. Cheers!
