Tainted Love- Gloria Jones
There is a new Soft Cell record due next year. I was never of fan, but I think everyone loved their Gloria Jones cover back in the day.
Didn't Want To Have To Do It- Ralfi Pagan
I mentioned last week that I was listening to a lot of late 60's and early 70's Latin soul and boogaloo on the Fania label and I highly recommended the recent boxed set release "It's A Good, Good Feeling." Someone new to me is Ralfi Pagan, who is represented by a dozen singles on that set. In short, Pagan was destined for stardom and then, as the story goes, was murdered on tour in Colombia because a concert promoter thought that was better than paying him. He had a special voice and his cover of the Lovin' Spoonful hit sounds like it went though a Little Anthony & The Imperials machine.
Life Of Surprises- Prefab Sprout
"Never say you're bitter Jack, bitter makes the worst things come back."
Zip Gun Boogie- T.Rex
The opening riff to this song was either sampled or just plain ripped off for something else and it's driving me crazy. I'm thinking either Elvis Costello or Squeeze. Or is it the other way around? Did Marc Bolan rip it from a Motown or Northern Soul track? Anyone?
Twin Brother- Eddie Holland/Soldier Of Love- The Four Tops
And speaking of Motown, here are two pretty great tracks from the bottomless well of unreleased music from that label.
And The Night Stood Still- Dion
Dion, Patty Smyth and Dave Edmunds hit the Billboard Top 100 in 1989 with this Diane Warren track. Still sounded good to me all these years later.

I question the sonic choices on Dion's 1980s records but also shrug them off as "of their time." But even with the unfortunate sound of that time, D DiMucci never, ever made a bad record. I found it really quite remarkable when spelunking the back catalog a year or so ago. He never didn't bring it hard.
I never noticed Prefab Sprout in the 80s/90s, but now I think they are the bomb. Great to see them in this mix!
Great SOTW collection Sal -- Thanks!
A new record from Soft Cell? :-)
In a related Canadian music blast from the past Martha and The Muffins just dropped a new album. Where have these people been? And why am I so interested?
The T.Rex sounds a little like the beginning of “There at the Top” from Argy Bargy. Maybe that’s it?
