From 2008, please enjoy bandleader and sax player John Ellis, Gary Versace on organ, and one of the many stupefying rhythm sections out of New Orleans, the one and only Matt Perrine on sousaphone and Jason Marsalis on drums, collectively known as John Ellis & Double Wide and what I have decided is the perfect song to begin your week, "All Up In The Aisles."
I believe I saw this lineup open up the Jazz Tent at the N.O. Jazz & Heritage Festival in 2009, and my memory has David Torkanowsky on organ in place of Versace, but it's been awhile, so don't quote me. I saw them again in NYC at Jazz Standard. What I remember about both performances was this song specifically, which grooves along funkily, offers some wonderful solos from the entire quartet and feels like a gospel revival all at once. Marsalis' drum solo beginning around the 6:00 mark, never fails to make me want to sell my sticks and take up the kazoo.

Thanks Sal. Great stuff. As a fan of Howard Johnson and Bob Stewart records, this is stuff that I really enjoy. Great to know it exists.

Matt released two albums with his own band, Sunflower City. Both are fantastic. Ellis' stuff is also damn strong.
Matt's wife, Debbie Davis, is a great musician (vocalist) in her own roght. She has sevral albums out (Matt performs on a couple and they got together and released two albums of unusual(but very good) Christmas music, under the title "Oh Crap, Its Christmas!". They also put on a Christmas show very Dec., that we will regrettably miss this year - here's a link to a youtube channel with several clips from past Christmas shows: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCWC-Y_e2v2CpgjMMxZGcXmw/videos
