Boozoo, That's Who

On one of my many long weekends spent in New Orleans, back when I was making the trip a half dozen times a year, my friend Barry who owns the Louisiana Music Factory suggested attending the Mirliton Festival. He assured me it would be a fun afternoon, with good food (many mirliton recipes) and good vibes. I asked about music and Barry replied in his Jack Benny from The Bayou tone, "Well, it's all Zydeco, so you can only stand so much 'shanka-shanka-shanka.'"

It's true. One can only stand so much "shanka-shanka-shanka." But in small doses, some "shank-shanka-shanka" can really put some pep in your step.

Rather than foisting a 45 minute Cajun and Zydeco mix on y'all, I'm small-dosing you with some good time music from Boozoo Chavis, the King of "Shanka-Shanka-Shanka." Here he is produced by the one and only Terry Adams of NRBQ.

It's Friday and you just can't go wrong with songs like "Lula Lula Don't You Go To Bingo" and "Oh Ya Oh Ya My Foot Hurts."

Ah, zydeco.
To which I say "more reggae!"

Thanks, Sal, that's a very fun album. Reminds me of how much fun we had watching Boozoo vs Beau Jacque at the old Rock n' Bowl. Good times :)

As with reggae, bluegrass, blues or any other genre with 'set' parameters, it can be samey if there's no imagination (on the provider's end and the listener's end) employed. Give a listen to Buckwheat Zydeco's album 'On A Night Like This' and tell me it doesn't hold your attention til the end!

That longstanding "feud" between Beau Jocque and Boozoo was classic!

Once in awhile either my wife or I will sing whatever words we can remember from "Lula Don't You Go To Bingo", and it always makes both of us smile. Great tune!
