Shorter Of Breath And One Day Closer To Death

Today is my birthday, one of my ten least favorite days of the year, including Christmas Day, New Year's Eve, Memorial Day, Labor Day, Independence Day and generally any holiday when the post office is closed. I don't like official timeouts. I don't like change. I'd prefer all 365 days of the year to be exactly the same, allowing me to decide when I should rest or take a long weekend or not mail out records. I'd also prefer every day to be sunny and in the low 80's. This winter crap is for the birds, though I guess thanks to global warming, I may get my wish, if I live that long. If you live in or around NYC, you've seen the endless reports of our snowless winter. "Oh my, when will it snow? I can't believe it hasn't snowed!" Shut up already! You know who wants it to snow? The ones who don't have to shovel it. I hate snow because I have to shovel it. I hate snow because I don't ski. Enough with the damn snow.

Uh...sorry. Okay I'm back. Where was I?

I don't like my birthday simply because the attention makes me uncomfortable, which is odd since, I celebrate me all year round. I crave the attention the other 364 days of the year, just not today. I have no problem with getting older. Aging doesn't bother me. I don't obsess over gray hairs or losing hair. I don't care if my Thin Lizzy tee shirt isn't age appropriate. I still enjoy Motorhead and the Dead Boys as much as I did 40 years ago. If I need to take a minute after walking up a flight of stairs, I take a minute. And who doesn't have three pairs of eyeglasses? I just feel like people are more concerned about my birthday than I am. That's not a bad thing. It's a wonderful feeling to have friends and family who look after you. I love the text messages and phone calls. But just like those bank holidays where I don't want to be told that I can't buy postage today or that because it's "Washington's Birthday" the subways have to run on a weekend schedule, I don't want to feel like I need to do anything to commemorate the year of my birth. I'm happy to celebrate yours. Mine, not so much. A few drinks, some good music and a pizza, that's an ideal birthday because it's what I like all year round. It ain't special. It's just another day. Of course, I wouldn't turn down two weeks in New Orleans, either.

Something else happened on my birthday, exactly 50 years ago today and I'm disappointed in myself for not knowing this until recently. Todd Rundgren's "A Wizard/A True Star" was released. I've always known I shared a birthday with Lou Reed and somedays I love that, especially when I listen to "Transformer" or "New York." But when I am reminded of "Growing Up In Public" and "Lulu," it's not as much fun. But sharing a birthday with my favorite Todd Rundgren album? That's what I'm talking about.

So aside from sending money, please celebrate today by listening to "A Wizard/A True Star." If you lose patience midway through Side One, don't tell me.

Hilarious recount - I know there's seriousness in there, but hilarious too.

And dang, 50 years ago today for Wizard, your birthday? That's cool.

Much cooler than me often telling people I started my journal the day Britney Spears was born. (I've kept a journal since it started as a 9th grade writing assignment - December 2, 1981.

Years later I was scanning Rolling Stone's birthday listings and saw that date for Britney's birth date ... thought it sounded familiar ... shite, this writing outlet I've maintained for 41 years began the very day she hit the world, baby, one more time!

To be clear, I am not trying to pass myself off as 50! AWATS and I have the same date in common, not year.

Many happy returns, pal

BTW, I share a birthday with Manfred Mann, which is not as thrilling as Lou Reed.

I leave the celebration (or lack there of) to you.

Thanks for the Todd reminder.

Interesting ... it is a "demanding" listen; you gotta sit down, pay attention, and LISTEN. When you do it is very rewarding.

I fear in this age of click, try, skip, ... if a record doesn't deliver in a few seconds I'm off to the next. It is tough to turn on the stereo, turn off the distractions, sit down. Yikes! Guess I really need a Zen Archer!

Feliz Cumpleanos, amigo!
Bought AWATS when it was first released (the local rock station in NO had the opening song(s) on heavy rotation then) and still listen to it regularly.

Happy Birthday! I'd wish you the same on Facebook but you were smart and never got on. :)

I was going to mention the Todd Rundgren connection but that's not all! Here's the stuff I put in the calendar on my phone (I add in weird events when they tickle my fancy)

On your birthday...

March 2, 1933 -- King Kong opens at Radio City Music Hall. (The movie, not the beast)

March 2, 1965 -- The Sound Of Music opens commercially as a roadshow production (you paid a premium, like IMAX, and maybe got a program and an assigned seat)

March 2, 1973 -- Todd Rundgren releases A Wizard, A True Star. (What a great way to celebrate your birthday. I'm doing it.)

March 2, 1983 -- The compact disc player and the first compact discs go on sale in the United States. (They came out in Japan on October 1, 1982.) I vividly remember the head of Sony on Good Morning America (or Today) showing off the new device and shiny discs and going, Hmmmm.

I think this is the coolest of all, Rundgren aside, of course.

On March 2, 1959, Miles Davis begins the first of two sessions recording the album Kind Of Blue. The second and final date of recording was April 22, 1950. Both were held at Columbia's 30th Street Studio in NYC. The sextet also included John Coltrane, Julian "Cannonball" Adderley, Bill Evans, Paul Chambers, Jimmy Cobb and Wynton Kelly on one track in place of Evans, "Freddie Freeloader." (Hell, even I could record a classic with that lineup.)

And cheating by looking stuff up online:

ON MARCH 2:

1797 -- the Bank Of England issues the first one pound and two pound banknotes.
1807 -- the US Congress bans the importation of enslaved people into the US
1836 -- The Republic Of Texas declares independence from Mexico
1937 -- the US steel industry is unionized
1969 -- the Concorde makes it first test flight
1990 -- Nelson Mandela is elected deputy president of the African National Congress some 20 days after being released from prison after almost 26 years.

You share a birthday with:

quite a few Popes
Sam Houston
Moe Berg -- baseball player and spy!
Dr Seuss
Marc Blitzstein -- composer
Mel Ott -- baseball player and broadcaster
Martin Ritt -- director
Desi Arnaz -- ba-ba-loo!
Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis --saxophonist
Bill Quackenbush -- hockey player, but I just like the name. Quackenbush!
John Cullum -- great actor, Northern Exposure, etc
Tom Wolfe -- New Journalism!
Mikhail Gorbachev -- glasnost!
John Irving -- Garp!
Lou Reed
Peter Straub -- the horrors!
Rory Gallagher
Karen Carpenter
Laraine Newman -- SNL
Dale Bozzio -- anyone seen her lately?
Jay Osmond -- the drummer for the Osmond Family
John Cowsill
Mark Evans -- AC/DC (the band, not the sexuality)
Jon Bon Jovi -- cowboy and singer
Alvin Youngblood Hart
Laird Hamilton -- surfer
Craig. Daniel Craig
Method Man
Chris Martin of Coldplay
Prince Oscar of Sweden -- he turns seven today!

And of course, you!

Happy Birthday.

Here's an idea for everyone when it's your birthday: thank your Mom. She did the heavy lifting.
