Joy? Maybe

MT Jones is another British, retro soul singer who I didn't want to like. The first song I heard, sent to me by a friend, was a real turn off, like third rate Daptone, which is already second rate soul music, save Sharon Jones, who was first rate. But my friend put up a decent argument so I went in. And I really dug it all. Nothing Earth shattering, as my friend said, but something I could definitely go back to. When he's not trying to be Marvin Gaye, he reminds me of Mick Hucknall, and neither is a bad thing.

Check out a few favorites from the new album "Joy."

Sal - what are your thoughts on Jalen Ngonda?

Not a fan. His voice grates after awhile. I mean, it all sounds pleasant enough, but I find it to be real gimmicky, like an AI version of soul music.

Glad you gave him a shot. Really liking it with each spin. Yeah, it's ersatz Marvin, Al Green etc. but I like it.

Love Jalen Ngonda. Sal's not a big Daptone fan but I am.

I still think that "I Don't Understand" is one of the strongest tracks. It's a bit of an "It's a Shame" clone but it's very well done.

Oh, I love Daptone! Sorry to hear, Sal.

I don't dislike Daptone. I just think they focus too much on sound and style, and using vintage mics, and recording in mono, blah blah, when they should probably work on better material.

MT pronounced empty.

Neo or retro soul is sort of a thing in Western Europe. A guy from Nashville has been getting a lot of airplay here, and they play the uncensored version of his song, Devon Gilifillian and "Let's Stop Fucking Around."
