If It's Tuesday, It Must Be Street Date: 6/15/10

ARIF MARDIN- ALL MY FRIENDS ARE HERE

Last recording by the legendary producer with help from Bette Midler, Chaka Khan, Norah Jones, Dr. John, and David Sanborn for starters.

BUY IT--->http://www.amazon.com/All-My-Friends-Are-Here/dp/B003JLA4I0/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1276601062&sr=1-1

STEVE CROPPER & FELIX CAVALIERE- MIDNIGHT FLYER

If at first....

Two legends try again for the magic that seemed to elude them on their first collaboration, "Nudge It Up A Notch."

BUY IT--->http://www.amazon.com/Midnight-Flyer-Steve-Cropper/dp/B003IODO3U/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1276601096&sr=1-1

GASLIGHT ANTHEM- AMERICAN SLANG

The Goo Goo Dolls have been doing this for years, and no one's going apeshit over them. This is an average rock and roll record by an average rock and roll band and man, if they don't sound exactly like The Goo Goo Dolls.

BUY IT, IF YOU MUST--->http://www.amazon.com/American-Slang-Gaslight-Anthem/dp/B003FK8V7G/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1276601131&sr=1-1

CHRIS ISAAK- LIVE AT THE FILLMORE

I've always liked Chris Isaak. I don't think he's ever really made that "great" record, but he's got more "really good" records than most. He really shines in a live setting, so I give this a thumbs-up.

BUY IT--->http://www.amazon.com/Live-at-Fillmore-Chris-Isaak/dp/B003G715E4/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1276601169&sr=1-1-spell

JOHN MELLENCAMP- ON THE RURAL ROUTE 7609 (4 CD BOXED SET)

Labeling John Mellencamp's "On The Rural Route 7609" a box set would be a misnomer on several levels. In format, it is much more akin to a lavish book and is in fact, not packaged in a box. With 54 songs, 17 of which are previously unreleased on any Mellencamp CD, on 4 discs, the set is thoroughly annotated by award-winning music journalist/historian Anthony DeCurtis. Also included within its 72 pages are numerous evocative photos reflecting Mellencamp's transformation from pop idol to his current status as transcendent singer/writer whose work is celebrated, sometimes as a painfully honest musical reflection of hard scrabble midwestern values. Mellencamp songs from all phases of that career are included as are special guest readings by Academy Award (R) wining actress Joanne Woodward as well as from Dr. Cornel West, best selling author, lecturer and commentator.

Unlike standard issue box sets, "On The Rural Route 7609" is not a collection of hits and near-hits in chronological order. Rather, each of the discs is programmed as if it were a free-standing album with shared themes and a sense of flow that offers one a compelling context to listen from start to finish versus defaulting to searching for the most familiar tracks. While there is certainly a wealth of well-known material, a significant number of tracks are offered that, while less familiar, are equally significant in terms of providing an in-depth picture of the Mellencamp's spectrum of creativity. Those tracks juxtaposed to signature songs long-associated with Mellencamp on the four "albums" in the set give long-term Mellencamp fans and newer listers alike, a more complete and insightful view of the artist's role as a writer and artist whose catalog of songs and recordings glow with substance and nuance.

"On The Rural Route 7609" is a musical journey that sheds new light on an American musician who, as both a songwriter and and social activist. Mellencamp found his true voice as he followed his heart and mind over the course of a career that, after an improbable start, has spanned four decades and is reflected in the selections heard "On The Rural Route 7609". "On The Rural Route 7609" is a singular way to discover John Mellencamp again.. arguably, for the first time.

OASIS- TIME FLIES (1994-2009)

Another hits collection from one of the most-overrated bands in history. I really do like their first two albums, but I think that's enough.

BUY IT--->http://www.amazon.com/Time-Flies-1994-2009-Limited-DVD-Box/dp/B003JZT2AW/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1276601230&sr=1-1

TOM PETTY & THE HEARTBREAKERS- MOJO

It's been 8 years since the last Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers album, and "Mojo" finds the band sounding great, if a bit too relaxed. After 3 solid listens, I'm still not overwhelmed by the songs themselves. There are some winners--"First Flash Of Freedom," "I Should Have Known It," and "No Reason To Cry"--and some losers--"Don't Pull Me Over." And as a whole, it sounds like Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers. But "Mojo" is in desperate need of "that" song that jumps out at you and bites you on the ass. Even some of the weaker records like "Let Me Up" and "Echo" had "Jammin' Me" and "Room At The Top" or "Swingin'" respectively. Good record this "Mojo." But I wanted great! Like, "Mudcrutch" great! "Mojo" is consistently tepid.

  1. Oasis?

    Lord knows I've tried.

    I'm agreeing with you about Oasis, is what I'm saying. Except I don't think they're the most overrated band ever -- I think they're the most overrated THING ever.

  2. transcendent singer/writer

    Sweet jeebus, do I hate John Melon Camp. Hate hate hate. Yes, his heart is in the right place, and he claims the right influences, but he's just a lousy songwriter and I'm really sick of people pretending otherwise. I'm looking at you, Elvis Costello.

    And don't get me started on Oasis. Those brothers, they're like two male Liza Minellis. Tiresome drama queens. Go away.

    Ahh. I always feel better after my morning rant.

    I'm curious about that Steve Miller record. Should I be?

  3. Oasis - "What's the Story" and "Don't Believe the Truth" never make it back on the shelf in my house. BUT I've never been tempted to add other albums to my collection. I have a soft spot for 'em but I suspect it is more for what could be rather than for what is. If Liam could just get over himself.

    Tom Petty - I'm smitten with TP so I don't know if I can be truly objective. Although "Something Good Coming" did make me zone out for a bit and I hope "Don't Pull Me Over" is their last flirtation with reggae, I still don't see skipping past them. "Good Enough" does if for me. Did you see the Mojo documentary on youtube? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FOJeUhUz70E I'm still smitten.

  4. Damn! I was hoping for a few words on the new Steve Miller. He's not one of my all-time favs, but he sure was a major contributor to the soundtrack of my teenage years. Is it any good?

  5. Sal,
    You are a " rhythm & blues " guy, that is why you are somewhat unenthusiastic bout Petty's " Mojo ".

    I am a " blues " guy, I liked it very much from the get - go.........

  6. Oasis' first two are great cds, and I would add The Masterplan, the B-sides collection from that period to those. Then, you're done.

  7. Tom Petty " unleashes " the GREAT Mike Campbell......finally.....

    Sal,
    Any additional comments on this recording since your original thoughts ?

  8. I like "Mojo," Meanstreets. I don't love it. It seems to just simmer, never really peaking, which is fine. On the other hand, I could listen to Mudcrutch all weekend

  9. You may be correct Sal, I don't buy much " new " " rock " music these days....And when I do I may be overly enthusiastic about them...
