My Favorite Song Ever...Once In A While

I was intrigued by the retro artwork of the CD cover when I first saw it. I was told there was some connection to The La's of "There She Goes" fame. (Still not sure what it is) I was blown away by the first song "Weed Bus." Nothing else on 1992's "Mexican R&B" or on their follow-up 16 years later, 2008's "Who Is This Is," (anyone know that reference) ever came close to the raw energy of this opening statement.

From the drums and woodblock intro to that nifty little guitar riff, "Weed Bus" is two mono minutes of British R&B perfection. Almost 20 years later, I still go back to "Mexican R&B" hoping to find one more gem, but it's never there.

Isn't this just a slight twist on "The Last Time" with some different lyrics?

Vocals sound like 'Magic Bus' to me but I do hear 'The Last Time' as well.

Glad to see you are back Sal. :) I discovered you around Xmas time (through the "Beatles aren't overrated" post) and commented that one time to tell you what a great job you do, and then just recently when you were ready to close shop. I'm shy about commenting, but that doesn't mean I don't read you (every day in fact) or think you're doing a great job, just not a person who comments much.

This reminds me of Magic Bus too. I like it a lot though! Robin

Regardless of reference, I love it! Good song, obscurity in the archives.

Edgar Jones is still around and playing the odd gig.

The connection to The La's is that he replaced John Power in the band in the latter days.

The Liverpool scene is so incestuous that he's had a hand in plenty of stuff since the album such as Ian McCulloch, The Zutons and Cherry Ghost.

Jones was also in Paul Weller's band in 2000, he's on the Royal Albert Hall dvd and was a member of Johnny Marr's Healers in the early days.

He also released three solo albums between 2005 and 2008.

I heard "Magic Bus," too. Maybe they should re-release the album under the title "Thirty Years of Mexican R&B."

The Last Time - check
Magic Bus - check

But I can't place the "oooh's" that come in at the beginning of the break at 1:40. Little help?

Anyway, thanks for pointing out this little gem Sal.

(trying to get in the habit of posting these things, instead of just thinking them)

Great song, and new to me, so thanks.

I'm a sucker for maracas, incidentally.

I am a complete and utter sucker for bands like these, I flipped out when KZSC was first sent the CD and played it like crazy on the show I programmed then. I think you're selling the rest of the record short, tho. I really like Weed Bus, but Sweet Thing, Right in the back of Your Mind, Take No Note of the World Outside and Sometimes the World Escapes Me are clearly the bastard children of a threesome between The Byrds, The Stooges and The Animals...

Great find. BTW the album and individual track are available at iTunes/eMusic etc. I grabbed Weed Bus but didn't take the plunge on the whole album...yet.
