"Your Saturday Night" : THE WEEKEND MIX
Did we have fun? I know I did.
Great to see how many of us bought our records at Korvettes!
Two of you bought Shaun Cassidy's "Da Doo Ron Ron" as your very first record, and "Exile On Main Street" got the most votes for "Saturday Night" record. Out of everyone's choices for favorite record of all time, there was only one, Michael McDermott's self titled, where I hadn't heard a single note. That is at the top of my "to-do" list.
Great comments by everyone! Thank you. I hope you get a chance to read them all.
Some highlights:
WHAT DO YOU SING IN THE SHOWER?
I don't always sing, but I tend to think along with "Norwegian Wood", to see if I can get in and out in two minutes. (I can't.)
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE SATURDAY NIGHT RECORD?
The Outlaws first album always hits the spot for me. Hey! Where did everyone go?
WHAT, IF PUSH COMES TO SHOVE, IS YOUR ALL-TIME FAVORITE ALBUM?
Rush - Permanent Waves (for sentimental reasons and youthful ideals...)
WHAT WAS THE FIRST RECORD YOU BOUGHT AND WHERE DID YOU BUY IT? IT was a 45-"Good Morning Starshine" by Oliver. It was bought somewhere in Sheepshead Bay in 1969. It skipped.
(Was it Rubber Band on Sheepshead Bay Rd. and Voorhees Ave.?)
WHAT MUSICIAN HAVE YOU EVER WANTED TO BE?
Leo Kottke - I'd love to be gifted with such natural drollery and to spin that kind of magic out of a 12-string guitar. Or Joe Strummer. Minus the being dead part.
But now...here is "Your Saturday Night" compiled and condensed into one 77 minute mix.
Maybe if we all put it on at exactly the same time on Saturday night, XTC will reunite for one more record. It's worth a try.

Nice job! I'm downloading now. I'll be sure to feature it tomorrow night. I've never heard of Michael McDermott. I wiki'd and Youtubed him. I don't know which song is the best introduction, but the two I sampled were head scratchingly pedestrian Springsteen clones.
My summer high school job was stock boy in the record department at the Korvettes on Central Ave in Yonkers 1974-75. We would open and play any record we wanted and then send them back as defective. This was a very efficient and inexpensive way to get a broad musical education.
Thanks Sal. Delightfully interesting for the weekend.

Excellent!
Thanks Sal. Have a great weekend and, especially, a very groovy Saturday night!
Nice mix. I recall Michael McDermott had a couple of hits in '89. "Who Do You Give Your Love To" was the Top 40 hit. A cover of "What I Like About You" also got some airplay (harmonica solo replaced with generic 80's guitar solo). He kinda reminded me of post-"Hard to Hold" Rick Springfield. Not annoying, but definitely of its time.
I thought it was great but have to admit to being surprised that no one mentioned Peter Lemongello's as a favorite Sunday morning record.
Thank you, Sal - looks like a lot of fun. Nothing like a full tilt Rosalita to get me bouncing round the room like a hyperactive rubberball.
And while I'm here, an inexcusably belated thank you and a tip of my imaginary hat for all the other mixes that have brought such pleasure to my listening over the past months.
I would have substituted Billy Stewarts summertime for same cookes, but otherwise -- fantastic mix, and thanks!!!
@Simels
Take it up with Robin.
:)
Will be fun to d/l later and rock out to over the weekend. Nice looking mix ~
Love this mix already, thanks Sal. Re: All Back to My Place - Damn, I love that feature too (tho my fave is "Hello Goodbye" - I wish they'd collect all of those and paste 'em up on their website.) Anyway I hate being left out. And ignored, which is why I'm posting to this thread. So shoot me.
WHAT MUSIC ARE YOU CURRENTLY GROOVING TO?
I'm trying to cut a CD right now and found that I was overplaying the guitar solos - too many notes - so I've been immersing myself in Jimmy Vaughan records as a reminder to cool it. Also, "Rome," which is pleasant enough and nicely different, if not necessarily something for the ages.
WHAT, IF PUSH COMES TO SHOVE, IS YOUR ALL-TIME FAVORITE ALBUM?
Elvis Costello, This Year's Model.
WHAT WAS THE FIRST RECORD YOU BOUGHT AND WHERE DID YOU BUY IT?
When I was 8 my oldest brother took me down the street to the paper store to buy the Strawberry Fields/Penny Lane 45. A golden memory.
WHAT MUSICIAN HAVE YOU EVER WANTED TO BE?
Keith.
WHAT DO YOU SING IN THE SHOWER?
The other day, it was "Hoover Factory."
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE SATURDAY NIGHT RECORD?
Crack the Sky, "White Music". A great, great guitar record, and funny as hell.
AND YOUR FAVORITE SUNDAY MORNING RECORD?
In A Silent Way.
Really enjoyed all the other answers. You know, the ones posted to the correct thread.
The "All Back" post was me, Sal. Cheers.
you've outdone yourself...wowzer
@stevesimels
I was asked about my Saturday night. :)
Mr. Stewart's fine but less nuanced version may fit in better with the mix created here, however it is not and never will be part of my Saturday night, which also included "Racing in the Street" by Bruce and another Springsteen gem "Tougher Than the Rest" by Everything But the Girl, both of which have the same bittersweetness, and world-weary mixture of hope and broken illusions as Sam's "Summertime". Sam makes me believe he's been there, and that the living isn't really easy, but we'll keep trying, I can actually see what he's singing about. It's breezy, but a heavy, humid, southern, knowing, breeze. Stewart's doesn't do that for me. To each his own.
Thanks for the gift of "Summertime" Mr. Cooke, I was blown away the first time I heard it. Lilting yet deeply spiritual.
Here's to "Another Saturday Night". Cheers.
The Korvettes on Central Ave is where I fell in love with records and Hardy Boys books (which cost a whopping $2.10 after tax). I think of the gray cement floor of that place and I'm 10 years old again.
This reminds me - since this mix is mostly made up of favorites. Since tuning into your blog here, so to speak, I've found a new appreciation for Thin Lizzy and Phil Lynott. I had never given them a second of thought all my years. But you've mixed in 'Old Flame' and 'Rosalie' into past weekend mixes, and those are about 2 of my fave songs of recent times.
Is all Thin Lizzy stuff generally up to those standards? If so, can you recommend a 'best of' or a studio LP I should start with??
I know, it's off-topic, but...

Leave your e-mail address as a comment. I won't publish it.
Sorry I'm late to post on this, but have been traveling all day. I'm the one who posted the Michael McDermott album as a Top Three. Michael is a singer-songwriter from the Chicago area. He had one minor hit in the early 90s called 'A Wall I Must Climb'. He was touted as the new Springsteen at the time, but that never panned out (obviously). He has put out music on-and-off ever since, and is supposed to have a new album out in June, I think.
Being a Chicago guy, I absolutely love his songs and their imagery. My wife and I attended a fan 'all request' show last fall to celebrate our wedding anniversary, and he played one of his internet-only release songs for the first time ever, at our request. He's a great guy. I imagine people in other areas may not get his music so much. That's ok.
By chance I happened to listen to his self-titled album twice today in my drive across 3 states. I sang along at loud volume, every single fuckin word. And I loved it. I hope that someone - - anyone - - out there who checks him out enjoys what they hear. Stephen King dug him, he even wrote the liner notes for the self titled album and played crazy guitar on the hidden bonus track on the CD.
Sal,
Michael Mcdermott's debut album 620 W. Surf and the followup Gethsemane are two that I love. S/T was his third release. If you're only going to go with one, do give 620 W Surf a listen...still holds up for me...
