The Box Fops?
On May 28th, some of indie and power pop's elite gathered together to perform Big Star's "Third" in its entirety, plus a whole lot more. Jody Stephens, Jon Auer, Ken Stringfellow, Mitch Easter, Robyn Hitchcock, Brett Harris, Norman Blake, Chris Stamey, Django Haskins, Mike Mills and Ira Kaplan knocked out over two hours of music. Some great stuff and I have it all for a possible post if there is enough interest.
Until then, take a look at this. Here is special guest Ray Davies who performed "Till The End Of The Day" and The Box Tops smash, "The Letter." I'm not exactly sure why I love this so much. I think it has a lot to do with how Ray sings "ANY-WAYYEE- YEAH!"

Yes Please Post
three other comments after watching the video
1) how about some props to the guy playing the hair dryer, ok you couldn't hear it but he was giving it his all
2) yeah i loved the awaysaaaaaaaas too which leads to my third point and not to be a killjoy but
3) when ray's singing really takes off like on the awaaaaayssss and on one verse coming off of an awwaaaayyy is when he's not reading the lyrics. It pays to know the words or changes so you can really play or sing and not just get to the end.
but it was really great that little gripe aside and would love to hear or see the whole darn thing
thanks as always mr. wood
oh, most definitely please post this show. yesyesyesyesyesyesyes
I'm ALWAYS interested in Big Star. Always
Yes, yes, please post! Inquiring ears want to hear....
Great performance, but is that guy on the left at 2:00 playing the blow dryer???
I'd love to hear this show.
Where did it take place?
Another vote in the affirmative, Sal. Please post the full show. Although I prefer the first two Big Star albums, Third is still pretty great.
Yes, I'd like to hear the full show. And I love how Ray Davies sings everything--he had me at "letter."
The hair dryer was buried in the mix...
The amazing Robyn Hitchcock on hairdryer ! Awesome !
Put my two cents in as another very grateful blog reader who would love for you to post that show, Sal. I've heard some of the earlier shows, but never one where they had all the A-list singers on hand. Yes! The post of that show would make my year! Yes, please!
LOVE the blog...this was my introduction to Big Star when it came out on PVC Records in the late 70's whilst in high school...i'd read about them of course, but no way were any record stores in suburban Philadelphia gonna have their 2 Ardent lp's...i remember being very confused!!! I'd fallen in love with the semi-recent-at-the-time "Raspberries Best" LP, but it took a while for "Third" to work it's charms.....
Yes, Yes, Yes!
Please post the show!
Would love to hear this too. And man do I miss the actual factual Big Star theyselves -- and Alex Chilton solo. One of my top 10 shows ever was seeing Chilton with his band at the time in '96 or so in a tiny club in Atlanta.
Big Smile
Man, Ray Davies *owns* it! Since a final Kinks album seems like a dim hope, maybe Ray should do a quality covers set. This is great, thanks. Huge "yes" on hearing the show. I've read interesting things about it.
Catching up on some reading, finally read the piece in the May UNCUT about Alex Chilton. Some interesting anecdotes and some pretty heartbreaking info about his final years. Man, it's been two years.
