Thursday's Phil Lynott Moment

There is something so incredibly charming and heartbreaking in the simplicity of this song from Thin Lizzy's "Jailbreak" album. I'm not sure anyone but Phil Lynott could pull it off, especially the "tra-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-las."

"Running Back"

I'm a fool now that it's over
Can you guess my name?
I make my money singing songs about you
It's my claim to fame

When they say it's over
It's not all over, there's still the pain

I'd come running
I'd come running back to you again
Oh I'd come running
I'd come running back to you again

If I said I was sorry
Would you still leave me?
I never thought you'd go 'till you did
Believe me

When they say it's over
It's not all over completely

'Cause I'd come running
I'd come running back to you again
Yes I'd come running
I'd come running back to you again

I miss that girl

The show is over
and we must all go home
Just leave me by myself
I'll be alright here on my own

If it's all over, it's all over
And I'm all alone

And I'd come running
I'd come running back to you again
Don't you know I'd come running
I'd come running back to you again

That will teach me to read too much into a song lyric!

Was it Freud who said:

"Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar!"

One of my all-time favorites, Sal. Thanks for posting.

Art Garfunkel could. :)

Nice song! Sal, you have turned me into a Thin Lizzy "meh" to a big fan. I'm now systematically going in and buying all their albums. "Black Rose" has been reissued in a beautiful vinyl presentation and I'm getting that from a store here in Atlanta this weekend. I think I gotta get "Fighting" next. Then maybe "Jailbreak"!

Oh man, you're killing me. Love that song. Love the electric piano, love the guitar solo, love the tiny bursts of B3, love the sax. However, the real who-but-Phil moment on that album is Romeo & The Lonely Girl.

I thought Sal hated the sound of electric piano? This is the only Thin Lizzy album I ever owned, and I didn't keep it very long. I remember this song though, and I can see why I bought the album. It still sounds like early Bruce to me. The judgement I passed in 1978 is the same today. They're as good as Foreigner, but not as good as The Kinks.
