One of the very best things about New Orleans during Jazz Fest is (was) the Ponderosa Stomp. If you are unfamiliar with the Stomp, it is a series of shows and events spearheaded by Ira "Dr. Ike" Padnos, an anesthesiologist by day, and a madman lover of rock and roll by night. The idea was to offset the big name acts that would appear at your big festivals, and showcase the unsung heroes of rock and roll, blues, soul, rockabilly, rhythm & blues and more. They often took place between the two weekends of the huge festival, but over the last five years have taken place in October, most likely due to money and logistics.
I've been to five Stomps, and every one has been a rare treat, seeing acts as diverse as Roky Erickson, Sugar Pie DeSanto, the Collins Kids, Roy Head, The Remains, Dale Hawkins, William Bell and more. I mean, where the hell is someone going to see The Collins Kids or Sugar Pie DeSanto in 2009? Dr. Ike made this happen every year.
For a few years, I would get a press kit in the mail, with an acoompanying CD highlighting past, present and future performers. This mix is the 2008 edition.

Whenever I listen to "96 Tears" I always remember Artie Federico berating me for liking such lightweight pop trash. I still love it.
