When the mood is just right, I think Ry Cooder's version of "Maria Elena" is the most beautiful piece of music I have ever heard. This morning, the mood is right.
And while I have you, have you heard Ry's new one, "The Prodigal Son?" What do you think?

I have Ry's new one, but have only given it a once over. It seems to recall "Paradise And Lunch", with it's gospel feel, in a good way, and I look forward to digging in.
As with BBJ, I've only spun it once - sounded like a winner.

Great new album from Ry Cooder. Especially enjoing the title track and the opening track "Straight Street".
Pre-ordered Ry after seeing the promo video. Enjoying it quite a bit. Took me a few spins to appreciate his version of Nobody's Fault But Mine (compared to the bazillion versions that I have heard), but I got there. Good stuff. joe

Man, I thought I was the only person who loved that song. And, the new album is fantastic.
While Paul McCartney was my original inspiration for making my music, I was more interested in making instrumentals, so Ry's "Cherry Ball Blues", also from "Boomer's Story" became the model of where I wanted to get. I've since realized the impossibility of that goal, as he was employing some of the best session musicians of the day. I'll never get there but have come to understand it's really more about the journey.

I've always admired Ry Cooder -- soundtracks, albums -- but never been fervent. I found the new album "The Prodigal Son" to be a drag in every sense of the word. Finding religion is no excuse for awful melodies. Admittedly, it was just one spin but I'm not eager to give it another go. There'd have to be a groundswell of appreciation for me to believe I missed something.
