The Battle Of The Covers: Volume One

We've got five cover versions here, all of which popped up on the iPod during my weekend train ride. I really dig four of them. One of them bothers me. I thought it might be fun to give them all a listen and cast a vote for the one you like best. Or, try to guess which one bothers me.

Please don't suggest other cover versions you might like better of the songs posted here. Let's keep it friendly, and focused on the post.

The Contestants:

Alborosie Meets The Wailers for a reggae spin on a Metallica classic.

Elvis Costello does Lennon doing Dylan.

Yours truly with The Hard Copies, on a second rehearsal take of Don Gibson's country classic.

The Randy Velarde of the music world, the mega-talented Paul Carrack and his cover of Jackie DeShannon's smash.

The Foo Fighters with special guest Queen guitarist Brian May covering Pink Floyd.

Have fun. Voting remains open all week.

I vote for the Paul Carrack track. Great song, and he has a fantastic voice. Production sounds a bit dated, but I still dig it. Hadn't heard it before, so will thank you for sharing it.

My least favorite was the Foo Fighter's cover of Floyd. Just a buncha noise to my ears.

I liked the Paul Carrack track as well (and agree with everything Troy said about the dated production.). Reggae cover versions of anything leave me cold (but that's me...)

My guess is the Foo Fighters track bothers you.

I've heard the Foo Fighters track before, and actually preferred it over the others. True to the original somewhat, but modernized for the sound of the particular musicians.

The one that bothers you???? Wild guess, but the Elvis 'I can't make up my mind how I want to sing this' Costello track might be it.

I liked the Elvis cover. I absolutely hated the Floyd cover

I think the "bothering" one might be the Carrack track, especially juxtaposed against the original.

My fave is the Elvis cover. I'm thinking your least favorite is The Foo Fighters.

Four of them are making music,
Paul Carrack is making money.

Yes to Mr Carrack.

The problem with the Paul Carrack track is that it's missing the jangle -- the best part of the Jackie DeShannon (and Searchers) versions!

I'm not a Metallica fan, but that reggae version surprisingly works.

Sea of Heartbreak is a great song, isn't it?

Not a fan of the Bealtles' cover. When I first heard John sing it, that was it. Never heard the original of the Metallica song (sorry not my interest), but the cover was pleasant enough.

I have to go with Paul Carrack. Joe

My vote goes to Costello. The Foo Fighters one bothers me, and the Carrack is a little too slick for my tastes (it sounds better if you don't watch the video). The other two are top notch.

Okay. I know you have been on the edge of your seats, waiting for me to weigh in.

I love the Foo Fighters track for excatly the reasons itsok2bright stated. It's big and bold and exciting.

I love the Carrack track. Always did. Yes, it's got that 80's sound, but all the percussion makes me feel like it's more Wall Of Sound than dated production. Terrific harmonies, too.

I dig the reggae Metallica. Don't know if I'll go back to it too many times, but it felt good and Metallica gave it a thumbs up, as well.

I really like my band's take on Sea Of Heartbreak. It is what it is, but we nailed the harmony and it was fun.

I hate the Costello cover, again, because of what itsok2bright said. Elvis sounds so uncomfortable, and I hate that high/wheeze vocal on the "HEY!" Really disappointing version.

Sorry I'm late—got caught in traffic.
Another vote for the Paul Carrack; the cheesy, dated video notwithstanding.

and I meant to add that in my next life I want a voice like Paul Carrack ( or Paul Rodgers!).

Very late, but...
#1- Paul Carrack, great vocals on everything
#2- Alborosie, surprisingly, I'm not much of a reggae fan
#3- Hard Copies
#4- Foo Fighters, too bombastic for me
#5- Elvis, the "Hey!" is irritating, and not even Paul Carrack can match John's vocal
