I'll be honest. My first thought was how did these fuckers get it to sound so good when I can't get a nice clean mix like that for my own stuff. Then I thought, what a selfish bastard I am. This is really nice.
Just beautiful. Don't usually dig covers of this tune, but this one is graceful. Nice guitar solo, the one thing Elvis Costello's version didn't have. Thanks for posting it.
When this song was released in 1974 I think Nick's tongue was firmly in his cheek. When Elvis recorded it in 1978 he spit out the lyrics right in your face. Now? It sounds beautiful and rings too true. And like it was mentioned, the harmonies, just beautiful.
Thanks for posting. Lovely stuff. Resonates even more in these days. I like the dog who makes an exit about a minute in - everybody's a critic......... Cheers!

Beautiful... This song takes on new meanings with the tragedies of each decade since Nick wrote it. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks. You're right. I needed that.

If just for the "where is the harmony" bit alone.....
Does Nick Lowe ever has a misstep?
Thanks for this.

I was thinking the same thing. That slight change in the melody makes that whole part soar!
How come my Zoom meetings don't make my heart soar like this does?
Beautiful!
It's right there in the lyric: " it just makes me wanna cry..."
And never heard of the Southsea Choir before. Why?
Wonderful.

Thanks again, Sal, for these wonderful surprises.
Thanks Sal - a perfect wake up for me.
