John Foxx & The Maths

Long time readers of this blog might recall a number of posts over the years where I've expressed my love for the John Foxx version of Ultravox. The three albums led by Foxx on vocals remain some of my faves of all time, especially the 1977, Brian Eno produced debut, which I wrote about at least twice.

When Midge Ure took over for Foxx, the band went on to great success as synth poppers without testicles and I lost all interest. Foxx went on to create a number of synth heavy new wave records himself, most of which left me cold. But in recent years as John Foxx & The Maths, his music piqued my interest once again and now, due July 24th, is a new full length, with Robin Simon, guitarist who played on the third John Foxx Ultravox album "Systems Of Romance."  This is the very promising first single and if the entire record is like it, we might have something that resembles what I fell in love with over 40 years ago.

We did a better cover of She's Gone.

Reminds me more of Tin Machine than early Ultravox. There's a second single, Tarzan & Jane Regained, that I like a bit more.

The John Foxx Ultravox had sharp edges & was a far spikier outfit than what followed after, plenty to get your teeth into whether gritted or not, but I retain a fondness for the New Romantics version of the band, commerciality included. Judgement reserved on the new stuff & thanks for the heads up. Cheers!

I always liked the early video for Underpass, from 1980. Solo Foxx and pretty atmospheric....Thanks for the new peek!
