When The Alarm Clock Rings- The Blossom Toes
A personal fave of my pal and band mate Sal Maida, the Blossom Toes debut is a special kind of 60's pop psychedelia. I found an inexpensive reissue that I play-tested before making a decision on whether to put my original on the market. In typically nutty record collector fashion, I may just keep both...unless the price is right for the original. (Accepting offers, by the way.) But I digress. This track is one of many great ones from that debut, "We Are Ever So Clean."

Arthur Green- Andy Ellison
Picked up a John's Children collection, the band that featured a young Marc Bolan and a young Andy Ellison, who went on to form Jet and Radio Stars. This track was on it, but in reality, was an Andy Ellison solo single. I love it no matter who it is credited to.

Not Tonight- The New Cars
Love or hate the idea of this band, this first single should have been huge! Dig that Elliot Easton solo, quoting Steely Dan.

An Ocean Between Us- The Galaxies
From Van Nuys, the Galaxies came to me via our pal Jeff K. One record in 2008. This track, quite simply, kills me.

Coconut Grove- The Lovin' Spoonful
In one of those spooky iPod, Big Brother moments, I had been reading about the Spoonful reunion earlier this year in a recent issue of Mojo, and this came on shuffle during the read. How does that happen?? ALL THE TIME!!!

Stop & Think- The Rascals
Just another fave from a fave band.

Lover, You Should Have Come Over- Jeff Buckley
It's been said, a child dies every time someone covers "Hallelujah." Ok, I said it. I don't ever want to hear that song again, by anyone...ever. Except maybe, a thrash metal version. But this track remains my favorite from Buckley's debut. And for you vinyl heads...if you're still reading...I have never been happy with any of the many pressings of this record. It's too long for a single LP, and the three versions I've owned, all sounded dead. UNTIL...I found a 2010 reissue cut at Cohearant Audio by Kevin Gray, the man behind all of those stunning Blue Note Tone Poet reissues, among other fabulous records. That is the way to go.

It was on Burning Wood that I first heard the Galaxies -- I loved it then, I love it now! And yes, An Ocean Between Up kills!

Thanks Sal. Stay cool everybody!

Your line about "Hallelujah" made me laugh out loud. Then my kids asked me what I was laughing about.

Nice zip job, Mr N. Got all nostalgic when I saw Andy Ellison listed & then you name-checked Radio Stars. I loved that band! Anyway, thanks as always. Cheers!

Dogbreath,
Do you like Radio Stars more than Jet?

I do, Mr N, how about you? For me, probably because I chanced upon Radio Stars without knowing about the previous band. Jet were more glam while Radio Stars came across as new wave if not quite punk. But it was the sense of humour of their Chiswick label singles like "No Russians In Russia", "Dirty Pictures" or "Nervous Wreck" that I eagerly collected that worked for me. I could go on (contd on p.94 - Ed)

Dogbreath,
I really love the Jet record and admittedly only know of a few Radio Stars singles, so I honestly can't compare. I'm going to do some homework.
