This Week In "Never Thought I'd See This On Vinyl"

25 years ago, Jonny Polonsky got a deal with Rick Rubin, thanks to a good word from Frank Black, and "Hi My Name Is Jonny" was released on Rubin's "American Recordings" label.  The opening track, which you can listen to above, has remained on heavy rotation since 1996, and the rest of the album is pretty damn good, too.

I'd be lying if I said, Polonsky's been on my radar all this time. It was only by chance that I stumbled across a pre-order for a 25th Anniversary edition of "Hi My Name Is Jonny," a limited pink vinyl edition in a very small run of 250. I can't take all the blame for losing track. Polonsky didn't get around to recording his sophomore record "The Power of Sound" until eight years later and then its follow-up, eight years after that. Hell, you could listen to almost all of "Tales From Topographic Oceans" in that time.

(By the way, if anyone has "The Power Of Sound" digitized, I'd be ever so grateful for a link. Thank you.)

But I digress.

"Hi My Name Is Jonny" is hook-heavy and its a complete joy from head to tail. Consider this a public service announcement for the handful of vinyl paisans who are reading. 250 isn't very many, but something tells me there might be at least 244 left at the time of this post.

You can grab one while you can over here, or you can call your local record shop.

Jonny Polonsky on pink vinyl 25 years after the fact---it's the little things, you know?

And even if vinyl ain't your thing, if you aren't familiar with ""Hi My Name is Jonny," now's the time.

This record does rock and it sounds great as well. I believe Jonny plays all instruments too. Saw him at Tramps opening for Frank Black, and he killed it! If you don’t know this record, GET to know it now. You’ll be glad you did.
