Shake That Thing. It's Okay.

I hope the good vibes from yesterday's Los Straitjackets post carry over with this gem from the Preservation Hall Jazz Band featuring Tom Waits.

This comes from a 2010 PHJB benefit album that is absolutely perfect. The legendary New Orleans band does what they do best, and better than anyone I might add, with a star-studded lineup of guest vocalists including Jason Isbell, Dr. John, Buddy Miller, Merle Haggard, Steve Earle and Richie Havens, who delivers a stunningly beautiful and heartbreaking "Trouble In Mind."

I hadn't thought about this record in ages, but in the middle of a busy vinyl geek reorganization, I pulled it out and it just made me happy all over again.

If you dig it and want more, check it out here.

This is a fantastic record by the PHJB! I'd love to find it on vinyl. Waits' cut is amazing. So is Richie Havens' and just about everyone else is a delight. Seeing many of these songs live is also a treat!

I, too, had forgotten about this one for quite a while. Thanks for the reminder, and the shot of festiveness in the middle of a long week!

OOh, what was the vinyl reorganization plan? In order by recording session date? Alphabetical by drummer? Do tell! (I'm actually interested.)

Plus, thanks for the song. I was pretty sure I dug the album at the time, but w my memory, who can be sure? Happily, I kept a geeky list and there it is in 201), one of a number of great albums on there because you hipped me to them. They were in the top 20 and Peter Wolf's awesome Midnight Souvenirs is at #2, not to menton Lil Band of Gold also on there. Thanks Sal!

Think of the records as a baseball team.

The records in the main room with the stereo are the starting team--the regulars, the everyday players, the MVPs.

The office is where all the benchwarmers are, the records that are listed for sale, the "injured" players that need to be cleaned or need better jackets, records I like enough to keep but not enough to take up precious space in the main room, etc.

The garage is the minor league- records waiting to either be sold or traded, or records that may have one or two songs worth keeping, but not worth taking space on the bench in the office.

Every time new players come in---collections, pickups from record shows, or just shopping sprees, things get shifted to make room, records get put in the on deck circle (waiting to be played) and certain records that go 0-3, get sent down, listed for sale, etc.

I do this weekly, sometimes more depending on how much comes in and how much goes out. And when I do, I invariably pull stuff I haven't listened to in ages, like that Preservation Hall record.

It keeps the inventory fresh and also generates more sales because I am always repricing records for current market value.

That was the short answer!!

Oh I LOVE your record re-organizing a la a baseball team. Where do the fans sit? I'd pay to watch you do it and talk about what you're doing and why. To see Van get sent down to the minors for some work on his swing! To watch The Coral get a look-see and then...nothing. Or see some kid like The Lickerish Quartet get the call: you're going to the Show!!!! Where do I buy the hot dog and beer?

P.S. I could never do it. Alphabetical from start to finish. No genre breakdown. Soundtracks mostly separate back when I had a gazillion soundtracks and those were by movie title but that was it. I got annoyed when someone was pleased I had classical and jazz separate, scoffing that the Beatles don't deserve to be next to Beethoven. As soon as they left, i mixed them all together!
